Kendrick hopes that he ends up in heaven. He wonders if he has done enough to get there. This might be a reference to the 1941 film The Blood of Jesus which is heavily centered around African-American culture. One of the main characters is also introduced to alcohol by a demon.

According to certain Christian theology, the notion that communion wine is legitimately Christ’s blood (without changing the physical appearance of the liquid) is known as Transubstantiation. These lines demonstrate Kendrick’s willingness to acknowledge the reality of God, although the hyperbolic nature also suggests that his prayer is one of desperation.

Kendrick wonders why he obsesses over death in his lyrics, especially because the stories and ideas he expresses about it could goad people who may want to kill him. He is worried about his own thoughts. What does it mean if he thinks about death a lot?

His infatuation likely comes from imagining so much death, inspired from his violent upbringing.

Also, This is illustrated in the music video. The artist creates a piece of work of bodies appearing to be laid out on a board. It is a visual of a chalk outline of bodies. But there is no identity behind these dead bodies. Kendrick is infatuated with death because death comes to anyone, no matter your identity. It is the only equalizer for everyone whether you are an innocent kid, in a gang, rich, or poor. I don’t think he wants to die, but he knows it will take you away from the crazy individual worlds we all live in.

This also echoes Kendrick’s intro song to Section.80. In “Fuck Your Ethnicity” the priest in the intro says:

I recognize all of you
Every creed and color
With that being said
Fuck your ethnicity

In the hook, Kendrick says:

Now I don’t give a fuck if you
Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, goddammit
That don’t mean shit to me
Fuck your ethnicity, nigga

Your race doesn’t mean anything when you are dead. Your identity won’t protect you from death. At the end of the day, we all share the same fate of death.

He wants to make himself believe that drinking a lot is the right thing to do. His gospel is alcoholism, and alcohol is “the drink of the Lord”.

One justification he might be using is that wine is heavily used in symbolism in the Bible and Christianity.

Matthew 26:27-28:

And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many."

Alcohol is also used in religious ceremonies and at communions.

Also, in Catholic church services, the pastor will say “a reading to the gospel according to [whomever]” before reading the gospel.

This represents the feud that Lu had with Altlantic Records about his album Lasers.

I am a hostage. I gave them what they wanted. If I didn’t, at the end of the day the album wasn’t coming out. -Lupe

Lupe has learned to only trust his own his own self.

Those 2 lines are linked to the pun below: Lupe is the endorser, the sponsor, and the enforcer. This explains the 3 me’s he references in the next line.

Also note this interesting fact!

“Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor”
“Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool”
“Lasers”
“Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor II: TGARA”

Lasers is the only album without his name in the title, a.k.a – he didn’t endorse it.
