Narcotics help him get back to his lovers arms. Under drug sedation he can relive the memories that they had together and quell the painful feelings.

Red wine and sleeping pills both contain the sedative resveratrol that helps calm the nervous system and in this case is taken in such a large amount that it causes hallucinations. In wine and sleeping pills drunkenness and other drug induced effects can come from in-taking large amounts of the drug.
The combination of these drugs is very deadly and could mean that he is trying to commit suicide.

Ok, so Nas is getting a lot of ladies on his way to Indiana. But which Phantom is he talking about?

  • The Phantom of the Opera, a disfigured opera-lover who becomes obsessed with a female singer. Probably the most likely option even though he doesn’t actually stab any women in the story and is revealed to be a virgin at the end.

  • The Phantom Killer, a serial killer responsible for several murders in Texas and Arkansas in the forties. He didn’t stab any of his victims though and targeted couples rather than women specifically.

  • The Phantom, a comic book superhero from the fictional African country of Bangalia. He has guns for weapons rather than knives though. And he’s married so presumably only ‘stabbing’ the one woman.

We’re going with Phantom of the Opera. There are loads of versions — there’s bound to be one with a knife-wielding villain.

This verse could possibly have multiple meanings

  1. Radiohead is addressing the very experimental and abstract style of Kid A compared to their previous works like “Pablo Honey” and “The Bends”. Yorke is getting across that though this album is like nothing they have done before in terms of lyrics and musicality, Radiohead is still “in its right place” and they will continue to make good music

  2. Yorke wrote this song upon the realization of Radiohead’s fame and this chorus might be saying that everything now is in its right place. Also Radiohead created the entire album of “Kid A” to get away from the sound and the mainstream they had garnered on Pablo Honey, The Bends, and OK Computer but ironically it only made them even more respected and famous.

  3. Yorke is saying that everything in the world is in its right place and as seen in the music video there are many abstract items that have found their place whether it be on the ground or a factory.

It’s a very abstract line that can be taken many ways by many different people.

RADIOHEAD FUN FACT:
The “Kid A” sounds exactly the same forwards and backwards.

Yorke explained that he wrote this lyric in a the period between OK Computer and Kid A where-in he was in a very depressed state. It makes sense because a lemon is very sour and makes a persons face scrunch up when their taste buds sense the acidity and harshness (the same face a person makes when saddened or stressed).

And just like the harshness of a lemon Yorke creates a metaphor where he and the people of the world wake up sad and angered with their face twisted as if they had sucked on a lemon.

Sucking a lemon is also a common UK phrase, it means you look miserable. If life gives you lemons, don’t wake up sucking on one.
