I don’t care about how easy or warm the relationship is as long as I have Blue.

If the sun doesn’t come out the sky is a dark blue.

After storms come rainbows! With light and color representing the positive, of course, a rainbow would be the desired outcome after the relationship takes a negative turn.

Rainbows are very colorful but I don’t care about any colors but blue. Since blue, red, and yellow are the primary colors, a lack of yellow (actually green) and red would leave only blue in the rainbow.

This continues the weather metaphor and begins the light motif. Light and color in this song represent the desired outcome in the relationship.

Not referring to a true cloud halo, which is a slightly uncommon phenomenon, but rather to a silver lining.

Metaphorically speaking, there is very little hope for the relationship.

Icarus is the subject of a greek legend who made wings from wax and feathers and tried to fly. He succeeded but he flew too high and the sun melted the wax and he went down.

If my bluejay flies too close to the heat it too will go down.

Metaphorically, this follows the same concept of the previous lines.

“The birds and the bees” alludes to the idiom which basically refers to sex. I use this to further the expression of heat and emotion in the relationship.

Fire is blue at around 2600-3000 degrees Fahrenheit.

That’s quite a bit for a bird to fly through.

When things “go south” (get bad) she’s going to want to find some heat (emotion) and will likely look elsewhere for it. When she starts looking for something more interesting our relationship will “go down in a blaze of glory”.

This also continues the weather and bluejay metaphors. As the bluejay migrates south to find heat, it may be too hot to handle and therefore the bird will go down in flames.

This is where the previously mentioned antagonistic fire theme first comes into play.

In the winter birds migrate south to stay warm.

This is a metaphor for what would happen in our relationship if things were to cool off. When the heat is gone so is the interest and eventually the relationship.

Bluejay is the combination of my chosen pseudonym and the love interest’s: Blue and Jay.

Because of this the bluejay represents our relationship and is a recurring metaphor throughout the song.

This also begins the use of weather as a metaphor for the same.

Right now it’s “nothing but blue skies” and a soft breeze, which are great conditions for a bird to fly in. However, weather is not permanent…

I “got the blues” even though my relationship is good because it just makes me wonder what will happen if things went bad.

I want to be the best I can to her as if I was in a competition to be the best man.

JAY Z made his own color, Jay-Z Blue, which he planned to use on cars though it never really took off. The color is made of blue paint with platinum in it.

Winners of competitions usually get a blue ribbon or a gold medal, but I don’t find either fitting enough. I want to be greater than the best, so instead of gold or blue, I want platinum AND blue and I want them together.

This chain returns later in the song…
