Dirt Road Anthem is the title of a country rap song written by American artists Colt Ford and Brantley Gilbert (who also wrote Aldean’s hit “My Kinda Party”), each of whom recorded his own version of the song. Jason Aldean covered the song for his 2010 album My Kinda Party, and released it as the third single from the album in April 2011.

The song debuted as a single as Aldean’s previous single, “Don’t You Wanna Stay”, was currently at the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. On November 30th, the song received a Nomination in 54th Grammy Awards for Best Country Solo Performance.

People thought that seeing Luda jump on this track would wreck on-stage chemistry as Jason Aldean is a country singer while Ludacris is a rapper, but Mr. Aldean clears it all up in this interview.

Jason actually states in the press release:

Ludacris absolutely killed his verse of the song, he name checks Kenny Rogers and talks about drinking cold beer … That’s pretty country, if you ask me!

It’s no secret that legendary country artist George Jones, who passed away April 26, 2013, was a laid back relax-first kind of man. However, The Possum did have a drinking problem, and there was an infamous incident when he went on a drinking binge and his wife had hid his car keys. Persistence kept George on a roll as he actually took a riding lawn mower to the liquor store!

There, gleaming in the glow, was that ten-horsepower rotary engine under a seat. A key glistening in the ignition, I imagine the top speed for that old mower was five miles per hour. It might have taken an hour and a half or more for me to get to the liquor store, but get there I did.

Tinie Tempah’s verse is basically summed up in this line.

In retrospect, Ellie’s verse is about letting go but she can’t. Tinie’s telling her to respect him and to forgive and forget.

It could be interpreted as Tinie cheating and trying to leave her (Ellie) but she can’t let go because she loves him.

The chorus can send shivers down the spine of any Canadian, even in the middle of the winter. “The Hockey Song”, by Stompin' Tom Connors, is as Canadian as Hockey Night In Canada or a steaming cup of Timmies. “The good old hockey game, is the best game you can name,” the song’s famous chorus goes. Connors passed away at the age of 77 from natural causes. In the message posted on his website, Connors says Canada kept him “inspired with its beauty, character, and spirit, driving me to keep marching on and devoted to sing about its people and places that make Canada the greatest country in the world.‘’ Connors had other popular songs, including "Sudbury Saturday Night.” “The Hockey Song” first appeared in Connors' 1973 album, but only the 1990s did it become popular. We’ve compiled some of his hits, including an appearance on the Conan O'Brien Show when the U.S. TV host visited Toronto. The performance got the crowd on its feet as Connors sang and stomped his way through the tune.

Often called The Ballad of Emmett Till by Bob Dylan, this song tells a story about Emmett Louis Till, a boy who was beaten and killed for allegedly flirting with a white woman in Mississippi in 1955. After his death, pictures of his mutilated body were publicized in Northern press, drawing attention to the continued treatment and situation of African Americans living in the South. Along with the Supreme Court’s ruling on Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, his death is an earmarker for the start of the the Civil Rights Movement.

According to Dylan’s website, he only ever played the song live once. In addition, the song never showed up on any of his recorded albums – only getting a record release on his demo series years later.

Today, Till’s death often draws comparisons with another boys killed by rasicm and prejudice – Trayvon Martin.

Emmett Louis Till (July 25, 1941 – August 28, 1955) was an African-American boy born in Chicago, Illinois, who was murdered in Mississippi at the age of 14 after allegedly flirting with a white woman.

Till was visiting his Mississippi relatives during the summer of 1955. As such, this line could be specifically referring to his general arrival in the South, or more specifically to his walking into the drugstore where he had the encounter with the white woman whose husband would end up murdering him.

Largely, besides the sample, there are no lyrics. Just happy beats to dance to and get stuck in one’s head.

Skrillex actually uses the same synth in his remix.
