Which caused yet more revenue growth for Yahoo, and further convinced investors the Internet was worth investing in. An Ironic Birthday occurs when a character has had to make a tough decision or has just lost something of extreme value to him, and upon walking into a room is greeted with a surprise birthday party. This is not a celebration that makes everything all right; this is about the character having to pretend to enjoy what should be a happy time while secretly suffering. He's grateful to his friends, but a party is the last thing he needs.
Contrast One-Person Birthday Party (when the character is suffering because nobody showed up to their party) and Forgotten Birthday (when the character is sad only because they don't know about the surprise party.) If their birthday is miserable but they don't have to act cheerful for a party, it's A Birthday, Not a Break. Examples:

The event will preview the new Genius (Beta) annotation platform, and a panel of annotators will battle to add images and commentary to key texts chosen by the artist about innovation. The panel of annotators will include Tom Lehman (Founder and CEO of Genius), Sean Monahan (K-HOLE), Nightcoregirl, Ryder Ripps, Calvin Waterman (Mood NYC) and others.

“You just have to get something out there,” Lehman says. “People will say 'this is horrible, anyone could make this better.' That's what happened with Wikipedia." As a prime example, he cites the article for 'Asphalt.' Today it's an elaborate resource full of interesting technical information and history. But it never would have gotten off the ground if someone had attempted all that while writing the first version of the page. What happened instead was worse, but better: someone got the ball rolling with a one-line definition: "Asphalt is a material used for road coverings," and others improved it from there. "That’s what happened with Rap Genius," Lehman says. "It’s a great thing.”
