Down, down, down in Gainesville
No stranger to shame, Coltrane, and pain pills
Angelface (Multiples 5 vs Travel 4) by Atmosphere

During a live performance in Florida, Slug opened himself up to the audience and told them of a story of a girl he had dated from Gainesville when he had once lived there. He might feel that this is a shameful experience.

John Coltrane is a popular jazz musician who died of liver cancer in 1967. Lewis Porter, Coltrane’s manager, has stated that he believes that John died from hepatitis, which is a disease that attacks the liver, due to his heroin use. Heroin is in the opiate family, along with many pain pills.

Slug might also be using the Coltrane as a homophone for cold train, which are freezer carts on trains that are often tagged with graffiti, which is something Slug often references in his songs and is possibly a culture he is part of.

“Denvemolorado” is a song from Seven’s Travels, another Atmosphere album that speaks on their constant touring schedule.

Lucy is a character in many different Atmosphere songs that is used to represent Slug’s many different vices in life, one of these being his love for his music and touring. He gives into this vice every time he plays a show somewhere new, making it seem like it’s running his life.

And I don't know what hurt it more
Professional journals or perpetual burn holes
Scarring up the dirty floor
Angelface (Multiples 5 vs Travel 4) by Atmosphere

While Slug might love his career choice, every now and then something comes along that makes it hard to deal with, such as professional reviews. All of these leave a lasting impression on him, much like a burn hole.

Slug’s hometown of Minneapolis is typically very cold. The Pacific coast is known for it’s wonderful weather. Heavy coats and sweaters, clothing needed in the Midwest, can almost be completely forgotten about there.

The warm weather is so enticing to Slug that he feels almost at home.
