Usually when someone is missing, posters are made and investigations sprung to find them, however Janelle doesn’t want to return to her previous state of mind. She has previously considered packed up her spacesuit and moved to the moon to escape this world, after all.

A conjecture is the formation of an opinion or theory without any substantial evidence, so here, Miguel questions a vague societal opinion, perhaps about love or artistry, or perhaps the desperation for fame mentioned in the last verse.

Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken is a 1991 Disney film about a girl who overcomes multiple obstacles to become a daredevil, earning the title of a wildheart, or a free spirit.

Miguel goes on to question if the world, controlled by societal opinions that have little to no basis, even have the courage to be free in their dreams. Ironically, dreaming in colour only became commonplace a lot more recently than you’d think, perhaps suggesting the influence the media truly has over people’s minds.

Like the (most recent) Flying Lotus album he was heavily involved in, The Beyond/Where The Giants Roam seems to also be exploring death in a jazzy, eye-opening way.

In an interview with Billboard, Thundercat even said that this project was recorded at the same time as You’re Dead! and Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly, saying that it was “kind of like a by-product of everything that was happening”.

Here, much like Fly Lo did on You’re Dead!, Thundercat welcomes and introduces us to death.

Raleigh Ritchie wants to live his life, even if it means losing his soul in the process.

The Seven Deadly Sins – Pride, Lust, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, and Gluttony, are used here to display how far Raleigh Ritchie has gone, or will go in his pursuit to enjoy himself.

Fair warning though, for anyone who wants to go on this life path:

For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Similar to the chorus of ‘Stronger Than Ever’:

And I fall, fall, fall, when it all comes down
And I won’t be crushed by the weight of this town
I fall from the sky but I won’t fall forever
I fall but when I’ll rise I’ll be stronger than ever

Raleigh Ritchie lives in a destructive cycle and knows that, even when he makes a horrible mistake, he can always recover from it and bounce back to where he was, or even higher.

This is a direct reference to the DJ Honda song Travellin' Man which features Yasiin.

I’m a travellin' man
Movin through places, space and time
.

After performing with Yasiin as part of a show at XOYO club at the beginning of April, Rocky revealed that Mos Def and Joe Fox would appear on the album when he debuted M’s as part of a Red Bull Music Academy lecture.

The girl in question has changed her number—He’s at a loss.

Drake will be lost without this girl, but is hesitant to find a replacement because they’ve been through a lot together.

Drake also implies earlier in the song that their relationship is covert, perhaps suggesting that he can’t call this girl’s friends to ask about her without exposing their relationship to the world.

Afterhours is Majid Jordan’s (then known by their original stage name “Good People”) first EP released on their Soundcloud on August 9, 2012 (it has since been taken down). It generated enough buzz to catch the attention of Drake, who would feature them on his single “Hold On, We’re Going Home” and sign them to OVO Sound. As a result, the EP was re-released in early 2013 under OVO Sound.

This song is personifying Death, making what happens to you afterwards a literal being doing physical things.

We picture Death to look something like this:

Commonly referred to as the Grim Reaper or the Angel of Death, it is seen as a merciless killer, when in reality this “being” is actually setting us free, saving us from this physical realm.

This carries on the extended metaphor of this girl being like the ocean.

Like the ocean, she pulls him away from where he wants to be, which is called the land to keep in with the Ocean metaphor – a place he only realised he wants to be after he’s already started chasing her.

Note the wordplay with “sleeping with the fishes”, which joins in with other terms and plays on words in this verse to create a bit of a semantic field.

It could also be suggesting that his attraction to this girl could be fatal.
