Create Layered Annotations

You’re no longer stuck with only plain text. You have lots of additional tools to create layered, more interesting annotations.

You can use bold and italics to highlight important points.

In addition, you can use space to break up long paragraphs so they’re easier to read.

For basic formatting instructions, look at the bottom of the “Write an Annotation:” box and you’ll find the “Style Guidelines”:

If you click the blue link you’ll get even MORE guidelines on other useful things you can do in your annotations on Genius:

Some of the basics are outlined in the annotated bulleted list below as well.

You get to earn points for all the work you do annotating Paul’s letter and related documents for this course.

Keep in mind that QUALITY is more important than quantity. Some great annotations, even if they’re worth fewer IQ points, are more likely to get accepted and to get you promoted than lots of mediocre annotations.

Here are various ways that you can gain (or lose) IQ, copied below for your convenience:

For everybody:
- First profile picture added: +100
- Annotation upvoted by a normal user: +2
- Annotation upvoted by an editor: +6
- Annotation upvoted by a moderator/regulator: +10
- Annotation cosigned by a Level 1 Verified artist: +2
- Annotation cosigned by a Level 2 Verified artist: +20
- Annotation cosigned by a Level 3 Verified Artist: +50
- Suggestion upvoted by a normal user: +1
- Suggestion upvoted by an editor: +3
- Suggestion upvoted by a moderator/regulator: +5
- Annotation or suggestion downvoted: -1
- Forum post upvoted: +0.5
- Forum post downvoted: -0.5

For normal users:
- Write an annotation: +5
- Annotation accepted: +10
- Annotation rejected: -7 (This is because the original 5 you got from writing the annotation is taken away, and another 2 is subtracted because of the rejection.)
- Suggestion accepted: +2
- Suggestion rejected: -2

For editors/moderators/regulators:
- Write an annotation: +15
- Accept an annotation: +5
- Accept a suggestion: +2
- Reject an annotation or suggestion: +2
- Edit an annotation: +0

For Verified artists:
- Write an annotation on your own song: +15
- (Level 3 Verified ONLY): Write any annotation: +100
- Verify your lyrics: +15
- Cosign an annotation: +0
DO upvote great annotations and suggestions you see.

REMEMBER, in spite of any competition, that Genius is a collaborative annotation tool. Ultimately, the suggestions, discussions, and collective annotations of you and your peers (not just the individual IQ points) are what will leave a lasting imprint on this permanent database of knowledge.
