In an interview with Noisey, Lovato revealed that two songs on Tell Me You Love Me are about someone they’re close to. Lovato hasn’t confirmed, but it’s speculated that both “Ruin The Friendship” and “Only Forever” are about their longtime friend Nick Jonas.

In the same interview, they touched on the songs and the person they’re about, who they discovered had also written a song about them:

I was frustrated with a certain situation. And I was like, ‘You know what, I’m just going to write about it.’ And so I did, and sent [the songs] to that person, and that was, interesting. Any time you send a song about the person, to the person—it’s ballsy. It’s like, ‘Hey! Here’s my feelings for you!’ … They knew [about my feelings], but neither of us had acknowledged [them] before. And then it turned out that person had written a song about me, and we exchanged songs. That person was like, ‘That’s an incredible song.’ And I was like, “Yeah, well. It’s like, ‘Hel-lo!’”

This is a nod to Toni Braxton’s 1993 song “Breathe Again.” The song is about the possibility of her breaking up with her boyfriend:

If I never feel you in my arms again
If I never feel your tender kiss again
If I never hear I love you now and then
Will I never make love to you once again
Please understand if love ends
Then I promise you, I promise you
That, that I shall never breathe again
Breathe again
Breathe again
That I shall never breathe again
Breathe again

This is not the first time that Kendrick has alluded to shooting or killing someone—he’s rapped about it throughout his career. The mentions go as far back as 2010’s “Average Joe,” where he rapped:

Was aiming something at my head, I needed survival
Got jumped, got jacked, shot at, shot back

He doubled down on 2011’s “Hol ‘Up”:

Tire mark gave you evidence
That I’m easily peddling
With the speed of a lightning bolt
As a kid I killed two adults
I’m too advanced
I lived my 20’s at two years old, the wiser man
Truth be told, I’m like ‘87

This continued into 2012 with “His Pain”:

Yesterday I invaded privacy of a home
The day before that my partner had fronted me a zone
A week before I had loaded bullets inside that chrome
Two weeks before that I shot them bullets and he was gone

And again in 2012 on “m.A.A.d city”:

If I told you I killed a nigga at 16 would you believe me? Or see me to be innocent Kendrick you seen on the street.

This also isn’t limited to Kendrick’s earlier career—on 2014’s “Buy The World,” he rapped:

My name gon' ring and my team gon' win
I shot a nigga once, and I’d do that shit again

He mentioned it twice in 2015, first on “The Blacker The Berry,” rapping:

So why did I weep when Trayvon Martin was in the street when gang banging make me kill a nigga blacker than me?
Hypocrite!

And again on “Deep Water”:

Once upon a time, I shot a nigga on accident
(Boom, boom, boom)
I tried to kill him but I guess I needed more practicing (Boom, boom, boom)

The movie he’s referring to is probably 2014’s good kid, m.A.A.d city, Short Film.

In “The Heart Part 4,” Kendrick further mentions his ability to shoot:

I ain’t sanctified enough to say that I won’t shoot ya

Interestingly enough, Kendrick would executive produce and feature heavily on the Black Panther Album. The album was released to gear listeners up for the blockbuster hit.The album’s lyrics line up with scenes from Black Panther. Kendrick even mentioned that he would want to be in the Black Panther sequel.

On “No Promises,” A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie raps about a failed relationship and how he still treated the woman well. He talks about the spoils and setbacks of a famous lifestyle, such as not being able to make or keep promises and having desires of having one expensive watch over the other.

Savannah just wanted to see me perform
And got hit over stupid shit
I woke up and saw the shit right on my phone
They don’t know who the shooter is
