Throughout the campaign, Obama and Romney had a fierce rivalry which was further dramatized in the media by the “pundits” (Expert commentators who offer their opinion to the media).
Obama actually uses the word “cynical” here as a double entendre;
Cynical refers to the politicians. Obama believes himself, his party and all other politicians are not motived by self interest or are distrustful.
Cynical refers to the pundits. Obama uses the second meaning of cynical to define the pundits as “doubters”. They’re doubting that something good will come of his re-election.
Furthermore his imagery of “red and blue states” refers to the electoral votes shown on TV networks as a visual display. This showed himself and Mitt Romney “head to head”.

He then completes the metaphor by reaffirming that himself and Governor Romney are no longer enemies but must work together to build a greater America for all it’s citizens by giving great emphasis to the final line:
We are and forever will be the United States of America
