There’s only one line about the girl in this song. The girl could be what has caused him to ponder the meaninglessness of life. The radio signifies a certain distance from the girl of his desire. Although he can listen to her, he can’t necessarily have her. “Couldn’t help” implies a resistance to smiling.

I always saw this as one small thing among this amount if big questions about the universe. The existentialism of the song is interrupted by something profoundly human and down to earth: happiness when hearing the voice of a loved one. Such small things make us momentarily forget about our meaninglessness in the bigger picture of the universe, and perhaps that’s really what makes life more than the simple act of waiting for ir to end.

What relates this line to “The Girl”? How do we know if this is a love song in relation to others on the album?

I don’t think it’s necessarily about the girl from the previous song. It could be that he heard a friend on the radio who has found success as a musician, and the moment gives him some hope despite his recent mood of sadness.

He made more money than Bernie Madoff, who’s famous for using a method called a Ponzi scheme that is essentially a pyramid scheme getting more and more people to buy into a system, which keeps it succeeding. When the economy crashed in the late 2000s, all the investors lost their money. This included high profile groups such as the New York Mets and HSBC. Madoff still was able to keep all of his money, but he is now serving two life sentences in jail.

Bile is a secretory fluid produdced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder. In classical medicine, excesses of yellow and black bile were said to cause melancholy and anger. Bile, and susbsequently, bilious, describes bitterness and anger. Pecknold realizes the duality of big cities in that they offer great opportunity, but also often give us great stress and clutter.

If he’s going to die anyways, why is he scared of death and constantly feeling the need to “pretend” for others? Basically, why does he react to the petty interpersonal relationship issues we have in our lives if he’s just going to die. Also, why is he pretending that life is such an important thing if he will die soon anyways.

This could also mean that faced with the reality of impending death, one response is to pretend like it’s not ever going to happen and live in denial. Kind of like The Plains/Bitter Dancer when the speaker says, “I should have known one day you would come. All of us walk so blind in the sun.”

A vacuum is a region of space with almost no atmospheric pressure. Because of this, surface area and weight have no impact on how an object moves. People often describe the universe as approaching a vacuous state, so Pecknold is just stating how we live in a colossal vacuum with no real purpose to our lives that we know of.

The earth is floating in space “the vacuum” without any objectively known purpose. Pecknold is wondering why at night are the stars hung, why the earth moves around the sun without a (known) purpose.

Why is motion governed by a body other than our own? Before modern science, people could not stomach the fact that the Earth was not a self-governing body and that we were not the center of the universe around us. Pecknold is reconsidering that notion in a more philosophical context.

While I think this annotation is very accurate, it seems that this line isn’t so much a reference to ancient beliefs as it is a metaphysical bewilderment. “Why is the earth moving ‘round the sun? Why are there such things as the sun and the Earth? Why are things the way they are?” In that sense, absolutely, Pecknold’s wonder is of a more philosophical/poetic nature than a strictly astrophysical one.

Pecknold compares stars to lights being hung in the sky, possibly by some almighty creator. This could also be a reflection on why we are ultimately here, as those “lights” often cause us to consider our humanity and our purpose with such an expansive universe.
