The ultimate goal of Pokémon is to catch as many of them as you can, and, in order to be “the very best,” to catch all of them.

Pokémon’s signature catchphrase, the simple and memorable slogan has become iconic in pop culture, it being the rallying cry for fans and aspiring Pokémon trainers. Originally however, the famous tagline used to be a little different.

John Siegler, co-writer of the Pokémon theme, told HuffPost that the jingle went through several revisions. He revealed that “lyrically, it changed a few times, because they kept changing their hook line, ‘Gotta catch 'em all.’ Before that it was something else.”

Norman Grossfield, head of production at 4Kids Entertainment, the licensing firm tasked with commissioning the theme song, disclosed that ‘Catch 'em if you can’ was considered as a possible slogan. He told HuffPost:

It was always my intention to come up with a tagline for marketing purposes that would also be included in the theme song. ‘Catch 'em if you can’ was one of the original contenders and did make its way into an early version of a theme song.

Eventually, they chose the more assertive ‘Gotta catch 'em all,’ which is now inseparably connected with the franchise—and repeated by Pokémon enthusiasts all over the world.

The surname of the anime series’s protagonist, Ash Ketchum, is a play on the slogan.

The lyric sounds like “Each Pokémon to understand,” and is even printed as such in the original CD’s jacket. But a Genius contributor reached out to a co-writer of the song, John Loeffler, who confirmed that the correct lyric is “Teach.”
