The original theme song of the English language dub of the Pokémon anime series, sung by Jason Paige. It was used in 82 episodes of the series, making it the dub version’s most frequently occurring opening theme.

The song is enduringly popular, inspiring 90s nostalgia and dank memes essentially since its release. The entire song is written in common meter—a rhythm alternating between 4-iamb and 3-iamb lines, which is, you guessed it, very common, particularly in popular music. This greatly contributes to its meme-ability, as you can sing many other songs using its melody, and dub the track into many other similarly metered music videos.

This track’s composition is very reminiscent of “Runaway” by Bon Jovi.

Nas, Mobb Deep and the Wu-Tang Clan (of which Ghostface Killah and Raekwon are a part) are known as pioneers of this mid-90s mafioso style (with albums such as Illmatic, Infamous, which this was included on and Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, amongst others), and are extremely close and affilliated. The use of jungle implies New York City, a concrete jungle. Nas' call-out on the track could be due to either a verse that he was originally going to be on, also the fact that they are closely affiliated (not to be confused with a Killa Bee/Wu-Tang Affiliate!)

If only someone had recognized the character’s virtues and given him the affection that every human being is due, he would have never thought of doing atrocities like this.

This is basically a sympathetic look at the last century’s rash of mass murderers and what drove them to do what they did. On Billy Talent’s website, Ben says that they were inspired by Columbine, the Oklahoma City bombing, and the DC sniper. The message is that everyone has the potential to do terrible things, and under enough stress anyone could be the next John Lee Malvoe.
