The song features American jazz-pop singer songwriter Norah Jones. She recalled in a 2010 interview with Billboard magazine:

I knew who OutKast were and I really liked their music, but I would never have guessed that they knew who I was. Andre 3000 sent me the music, but there wasn’t any singing on it yet so I didn’t know the vocal melody or the words. When we got to the studio he said, ‘Give me a minute,’ and he did all his vocals — a lot of layers, a lot of harmonies. He did it very quickly. I don’t know how much he had prepared or if it was mostly improvised, but he definitely had a clear picture of what he wanted.

The story is weaved throughout the album, through every song. So the letter is from his baby moma that he was previously in a relationship starting at “Spread” ending with “Roses”. Her character is then revisted in “She’s Alive”, dwelling into the difficulties off single parenthood. This is a letter about that she still loves him. However Andre´ is now married. The letter ends with “my favorite stuff” – a fittingly segway to the next track; “My Favorite Things”, which is instrumentations only.

Benjamin has said the album is 80% based off his own experiences so in real life the baby moma is Erykah Badu, whom gave birth to his son Seven Sirius Benjamin ´97.

In 2003, the album was reissued, with “The Love Below” having a revised track listing. A 21 second skit was placed before “My Favorite Things”, entitled “The Letter”. To make room, the radio excerpt from “A Life in the Day of Benjamin André” was excised, shortening the track to 4:50.
