George Plimpton, the founder of the Paris Review, Intellivision spokesperson, and general enigma, is one of my idols. Most of my “art” is based on his “participatory journalism,” except I can’t play sports well enough to do the really weird stuff. When a company did a parody ad with John Hodgman around 2007, I hung it up in my locker at the school where I taught. Then a kid ripped a hole in the locker trying to get some lollipops. He did not damage the poster.

Blumenthal is a master of “room where it happens” as life philosophy

Can’t tell if the composition is serendipity, with him “at the center” of everything but also appearing psychologically centered with the hint of a half smile

Here we call back to his preternatural ability to be described as preternatural – he conveys youthfulness without Silicon Valley slickness, analogous to an interventional cardiologist with big city hospital privileges buttressing a lucrative inner ring suburban practice – health conscious but not health militant, a social conversation starter and smart dresser, beginning to embrace the looseness of a man who has come to terms with the prospect of recalibrating his values in early reluctant retirement. Also a fan of the specs, which are rather forward leaning for a man “in the arena” without being offensively roundie

I write the above not to judge the man, nor even to describe him, but to praise the author of this profile. He really “gets it,” what Blumenthal represents as a Washington caricature, in the Mark Leibovich reportage vein. This piece is about what Blumenthal connotes, as is this annotation; this article is premised upon the idea that “Sid” is a chipper cipher.

The last minute of this recent Chris Hayes spot, part of the book presser, is great. Hayes is reduced to reactive sputtering and non-verbal whiskey-tango-foxtrot at all the innuendo. Sid’s just being Sidney – smart and unflappable and how. The opacity flummoxes people who orbit around him (the word isn’t charisma but somewhere in that word’s vicinity)

HAYES: Do you still email with Hillary Clinton?

BLUMENTHAL: Do I still email with Hillary Clinton? We`re friends.

HAYES: You can answer that.

BLUMENTHAL: No, no, we`re – we have been friends for 30 years.

HAYES: All right, Sidney Blumenthal. The book is “A Self-Made Man.”
Abraham Lincoln is the first of a four-volume biography you have been
working on for quite sometime.

BLUMENTHAL: Nearly a decade.

HAYES: Nearly a decade.

Countless E-mails is usually a ploy for legacy (Buckley was famously prolific in praising people as well, albeit on paper)

Elsewhere in the E-mails he attacks the New Republic, the chief pusher for the Third Way and a gabby forum for people who wanted to be him with some academes thrown in for gigs
