So I creep.
And hope my boo is just a slow-ass learner.

Word is Turner Classic Movies reruns of Bond.
Burn or get burned.
This bird chirps relaish shit.
This Sherman's on fire.

Subverting the notion that everything remotely connoting hip-hop comes back to Atlanta. TLC’s “Creep” was written and produced there. “My Boo” is Miami bass, though that connects back to the Space Jam soundtrack and that has obvious ties to the Dream Team. “Word is bond” is something white people who watch The Wire quote. Ludacris made up Atlanta slang that white people enjoyed. Alicia Keys, who’s from New York, is cool. Sherman burned Atlanta.

That last part shouldn’t quite fit in!

The Slow Learner is a Thomas Pynchon short story collection I once sent as a birthday present to a guy I wanted to date.

To everything, turn or Ted Turner.
Vexation of spirit or whatever.
Pete Seeger's an old.
Inside CNN Studios by MoMilli 25

RIP Pete Seeger (“vexation of spirit” is from the original Ecclesiastes). Homesickness as death, loneliness as death, longing for repair of the American social contract as death. Solipsistic whining as the death of the reader. Vanity of vanities!

Turner has the sage American original seniority of Seeger for diametrically opposite social purposes. Bonfire of the Vanities type parodic Eighties purposes. I was obsessed with the recreation of Turner on The Critic as a child.

But I'm like, "Yeah." Inside CNN Studios by MoMilli 25

“Yeah!” was probably the biggest hit at Yale during the Rap Genius co-founders' days at Yale. Its only close competitors were “In Da Club,” “Toxic,” “Crazy in Love,” and “Ignition (Remix).” (None of which were written by Tricky and The-Dream.) Music critics at Yale wrote exegesis after exegesis of “Yeah!” It’s an Atlanta standard.

Technically New York slang, but Atlanta is really the axis of a lot of the East Coast production

“Royals” by LORDE was popular at the time, and her song “Team” was playing in the car while I was drafting this poem in my head. If Tricky and The-Dream write her a song, she will be bigger than Taylor Swift.

Thought it was something I could trust, but it'd been doubling up with trust issues. Inside CNN Studios by MoMilli 25

From “Same Girl” by Usher and R. Kelly, which discusses Chicago geography over that of the Buckhead section of Atlanta (CNN Studios is in Midtown)

“Double Up” refers in the song to identity play and double-teaming your girl, or doubling down on life decisions. Here it refers to psychosomatic anxiety reactions.

All the sweet Carl Lewis slowing down.
Even Coke loses its street value in cream.

“MacArthur Park” jokes (that’s in L.A. but this is about the Olympic park, and L.A. was the previous American city to host the Summer Olympics)

Debated using Edwin Moses, who actually lives in Atlanta, but Carl Lewis is arguably a more iconic sprinter.

Poem about post-Y2K American torpor (“cream” like “cash rules everything around me” and cream soda).

Didn’t get to the Coke museum.

Swim, adult. Inside CNN Studios by MoMilli 25

Cartoon Network Adult Swim is based out of Atlanta, and this time at the CDC that inspired the poem was really my first notion of what my “adult” (post-training) job in medicine might look like. I wrote the first draft of this poem in front of a sculpture of the Adventure Time rainicorn.

I don’t get most of the shows on there, which seem like a dumb version of what could be truly great stoner humor in the right hands. So this poem is an attempt to create bad stoner humor as poem.
