Frank uses these mountains with twin peaks as a symbol for the ups and downs in a relationship, but also as a literal source of shade. This is a reference to the cult classic TV show co-created by David Lynch, Twin Peaks.

Additionally, “highs and lows” could be another movie reference to Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 film High and Low. Frank is a noted fan of Kurosawa, putting three of his films in his 100 favorite movies list.

Both Twin Peaks and High and Low fall into the loosely defined genre of film noir, traditionally known for high-contrast black and white cinematography with heavy use of shadows, to which “shaded off” is most likely a reference.

For a lot of families, the moment that the streetlights come on is the moment that night officially begins. Kids have to stop playing outside and are expected home for dinner.

Here the speaker seems to fear that his relationship is approaching its twilight stages and is close to an end. Or, more literally, that he’s not staying the night with his lover and is heading back home to be alone.

In relating this relationship back to an important symbol of childhood, Frank may be reflecting on one of his earlier relationships, perhaps the first love he described in his open letter.

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are two of the top tennis players in the world. Despite Federer’s illustrious career and continued success (he was the number 3 player in the world at this song’s release), Frank seems to be using him as a symbol for the fading old guard as Djokovic has gotten the upper hand in most of their last few contests.

However, since both players are still great at their game, Frank could also be raising the question if it makes any difference to be on the top when you have already done a pretty good job. Just like Roger Federer, Frank let his mark on history with his previous work. Still, people continues to pressure him to create something better, as if he had no other choice, but to be the number one or be surpassed by someone else.

A McMansion is a large, generic, mass produced mansion. It got its name from the items on a McDonalds menu (McNugget, McFlurry, etc.) but Frank takes things literally and treats buying a mansion as a drive-thru order.

Frank is frustrated in this relationship because he feels he puts in all the work while his partner is waiting around for their dream to pop off rather than working for it. He’s also punning on the genre of dream pop.

Lukas Graham is a band! Though to be fair Lukas Graham was also the lead singer’s stage name.

“But Julian, I’m A Little Older Than You” is Courtney Love’s response to a negative interaction she had with Julian Casablancas (the lead singer of The Strokes) at a party.

Love pulled Casablancas aside to give him the “Bono talk” about becoming a huge rock band, but Julian told her that U2 was shitty before leaving her to rejoin his band.

The Avalanches explained why they chose Wildflower as the album title in their Beats 1 interview with Zane Lowe:

We just wanted something that wasn’t too descriptive. It just had a good feeling because we wanted the music to be the main thing, you know? Like sometimes you can give a record a title that was trying too hard to paint a certain picture. We just loved those old Beach Boys records like Smile and those really simple sorts of titles, and we just wanted something simple so it wouldn’t get in the way of the music.
