“Lock jaws” is another way of saying Joey squares up his competition. While the myth has been disproven, there is a long-existing belief that blue-nose pitbulls can lock their jaw to hang on to whatever they’re biting.

As Jay Z explained to Bono in his book Decoded, hip-hop is unique in how difficult it is to stay on top. It’s possible to get by on legacy in other genres but hip-hop is predicated on competition, meaning that one false move can knock you off of the top spot in a blink.

In hip-hop, top artists have the same pressure a rock star like Bono has—the pressure to meet expectations and stay on top. But in hip-hop there’s an added degree of difficulty: While you’re trying to stay on top by making great music, there are dozens of rappers who don’t just compete with you by putting out their own music, but they’re trying to pull you down at the same time… hip-hop is the only art that I know that’s built on direct confrontation.

Seeing as Joey has named “Paper Trail$” the proper intro to his debut album B4.DA.$$, this serves as a warning to the current kings of hip-hop that he plans to take their top spot after this album.

It’s commonplace to fill out a 68-team bracket for the NCAA March Madness tournament. Teams that upset their highly favored opponents in the tourny are called “bracket busters”, since they knock out the teams many people predicted to go far in their brackets.

As Joey alluded to earlier in the verse, one of his goals is to knock hip-hop royalty off of the top spot, which is why he compares himself to one of these bracket busters.

Joey is all about balance as stated in many interviews, most recently his Hot97 talk with Ebro and Rosenberg. In this case, he’s balancing his vices with his desire to create his own saga and embark on a storied rap career.

“Agua” is the Spanish word for water, connecting this line to the previous and following lines that use Spanish words.

Joey doesn’t even need a dollar and a dream, a penny for his thoughts is enough to make him rich. This line has parallels with the plantations in the beginning of the verse — employing slaves that work nearly every hour of the day can make your profits exponentially larger than the start up cost of a plantation.

Using 1 penny to acquire 20 hours worth of work ties in nicely with the release date of B4.DA.$$ and Joey’s birthday — January 20th (1/20.)

This Oscar nomination came only a couple days after the writers, John Legend and Common, won the 2015 Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

Common was originally asked to write the song, and called Legend to ask for his help. Both writers drew on the gospel music of their youth, as well as the inspiration gospel music gave to Dr. King.

Reese Witherspoon is nominated for playing the protagonist, Cheryl Strayed, from the memoir Wild. In the film Witherpoon’s character hikes the 1,100-mile Pacific Crest Trail following emotional and physical turmoil which uproots her former life.

Critically, this role was seen as a courageous departure from Witherspoon’s known “perky persona.” In addition, Witherspoon took a physical risk, opting to not train for the trek/physical aspects of the role in favor of reflecting the real obstacles Strayed encountered.

Despite a few perceived snubs in the Best Director and Picture categories for Anderson, this is a category he has traditionally done well in. After receiving nominations for The Royal Tenenbaums and Moonrise Kingdom, the Grand Budapest is the favorite to take home this category.

Beautifully written, with language as flowery as its set pieces (especially when describing Monsieur Gustave), the screenplay matches the film in theme and quality. Read it here.

Zimmer tightens his chokehold on this category with his 12th nomination for Best Original Score since 1995’s The Lion King. Known for his work with director Christopher Nolan as of late, his powerful, anthemic scores have dominated some of the biggest movies in recent memory such as The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, and Inception. But the pair went in a different direction for Interstellar.

Zimmer and Nolan were aware that their sound “[had] sort of seeped into other people’s movies a bit” so it was time to reinvent it. Zimmer mostly got rid of the strings and drums that had become his trademark as of late, and the result was a more muted score that sat in the background for most of the movie but was just as powerful when it sprang into the foreground (e.g. “Docking”)

Interestingly enough, Nolan had Zimmer write the score before Zimmer had any idea what the plot was. Some directors make their composers tailor the score to the movie, but Nolan usually gives Zimmer free reign to create.

This marks the first time since the Academy expanded to 10 Best Picture nominations in 2010 that someone nominated for Best Director didn’t see their movie get a Best Picture nomination. Though Miller can’t really complain, as he is now 2/3 on Best Picture (Capote and Moneyball) and Best Director (Capote and Foxcatcher) nominations.
