Goku is the protagonist of the Dragon Ball manga and television series. He usually has black hair, but when he changes into his natural Super Saiyan form, it turns blonde.

Blonde hair has been a major motif in Ocean’s lyrics since he named an album after it. On “Slide,” Frank presents dyeing hair blonde as an act of youthful carelessness. By asking his lover if they are a natural blonde, Frank is wondering whether or not they are as free spirited as he is.

The fact that Goku’s natural hair is black implies some irony in Frank’s question. As if he’s suggesting the person referenced is pretending to be something they’re not.

However, one could argue that Goku’s Super Saiyan transformation was representative of his true self coming out. This would also tie in with the recurring theme of blonde hair mentioned before.

Frank also referenced Dragon Ball on his 2012 song “Pink Matter” by mentioning the character Majin Buu.

Shoegaze is a music genre that emerged in the U.K. indie rock scene in the 1980s. It got its name from the artists that focused on their instruments and effects pedals to create a textured sound—they looked at their shoes rather than at the audience.

Frank compares himself to shoegaze artists because he can’t look the person he’s addressing in the eyes. Being hesitant to face them he turns to his shoes instead.

Frank updates the lyrics from the original version in his cover of “Only You”. The Steve Monite version has the lyric “So I got a woman”, rather than “So I got a new man”. Frank continues to refer to a male lover throughout the rest of the song.

John Coltrane was a famous jazz saxophone player in the 1950s and 1960s. Vic is starting to worry that he’s “tooting his own horn” (singing his own praise) too much like Coltrane playing the sax, as the majority of this song is dedicated to the promises that he kept and nice things he did for friends and family.

“Coltrane” also sounds like “coal train,” which suggests that Vic could also be playing on a conductor “tooting” the train’s horn:

A direct deposit is when a paycheck is transferred directly into your bank account so that you never have to go to the bank. Likewise, Tyler believes his friends avoid in-person encounters with him.

Tyler also plays on “check” to mean both a bank note and the verb “check”; he feels like, if his friends really cared about him, they would make an effort to see how he’s doing even if going out of their way to meet with him was inconvenient.

“Hands of Gold” is a ballad in A Storm of Swords from George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. In the book, Symon Silver Tongue sings it to Tyrion Lannister to let him know that he is aware of his secret relationship with the handmaiden Shae in an attempt to blackmail him.

The song later appeared in Game of Thrones, the TV series based on the book, as performed by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran in a cameo. It is unclear whether the song has the same meaning in the show as it had in the books.
