Time periods of 40 are part of a common theme in the Bible. The Israelites wandered the desert for 40 years, The flood in the story of Noah lasted 40 days and 40 nights, and Jesus was tempted by the Devil in the desert for 40 days and nights as well. SZA is going through similar trials.

“No New Star” refers to her not being a new star as the Devil is also referred to as the “Morning Star.”

“Fuck your Third Eye” leads into the next two lines. The Third Eye is a book by Sophia Stewart who accused the creators of The Matrix trilogy of ripping her book off. She claimed the Wachowskis solicited her for a film treatment in 1986, when the elder Wachowski was still in college, and the younger was barely out of high school. By saying “Fuck your Third Eye!” and juxtaposing it with “I be The One / Neo” SZA’s calling out the fakes and declaring she’s above them. When SZA mentions “the Sun”, she’s referring to the sunrise created in Neo’s honor.

Furthermore, SZA’s real name, Solana, means “of the sun.”

SZA is feeling like a fool because she does not have life figured out in way that she thought.
“How Foolish We Were” is a poem by Emmanuel Oduro.

The poem is about the innocent ignorance we posses as children, and how that affects our lives during school and after, relating to the theme of this song.

Additionally, “Immanuel” means “God with us” in Hebrew. SZA may be speaking to God, discussing times in her life when she has been rather foolish, thinking she had something she wanted, but did not.

This song is about how critics easily criticize artists' music and how bad it feels for the artists to take all that criticism.

Here’s an interview where he, amongst other things, discusses this very song “Fragile”

Yelawolf was also to be featured on this song but his verse wasn’t sent in time (source: Something Else DVD).

A play on the words high and way.
