Avant Peyton Reed, c'est Edgar Wright qui devait réaliser le film mais il a été écarté car il voyait le film comme un mini-blockbuster, sans suite envisageable.
Le synopsis officiel dévoilé par Marvel Studios est le suivant :
Armé d’une capacité étonnante, celle de rétrécir tout en augmentant sa force, l’arnaqueur Scott Lang (Rudd) doit embrasser la part du héros qui est en lui et aider son mentor, le Dr Hank Pym (Douglas), en protégeant le secret du costume d’Ant-Man d’une nouvelle génération de menaces gigantesques. Contre ces obstacles en apparence insurmontables, Pym et Lang doivent planifier et réussir un cambriolage qui sauvera le monde.C'est Paul Rudd qui incarnera Ant-Man, et le célèbre Michael Douglas campera le rôle du Dr Pym.
Le tournage devrait débuter à partir de mi-août 2014.
Ant-Man sera donc le 1er film de la phase 3 des Marvel Studios.

Dans ce film, l'équipe des Avengers, qui revient au grand complet après le 1er film de 2012, devra affronter un nouvel ennemi : Ultron, interprété par James Spader.
Le film est le dernier film de la phase 2 entamée par les Studios Marvel, après Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2 et Les gardiens de la galaxie.
Après 6 mois de tournage s'étendant de Londres, à l'Italie, aux Etats-Unis, en Afrique du Sud et en Corée du Sud, Joss Whedon annonce le 7 août 2014, la fin du tournage de ce 2ème volet des Avengers.
