Explained in keeping with the religious motif of the song, ‘Ye has discovered that, in the words of The Beatles (who were, after all, bigger than Jesus) “All you need is love”. John Lennon has gone on to clarify:

I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It’s just that the translations have gone wrong.

These lyrics continue the themes of free will in the hook, as well as the concept developed in Jay’s verse of himself, ‘Ye, and Jesus as the holy trinity (aka God).

But about never fucking nobody without telling ‘Ye: The kind of love that Kanye needs is open, honest, ethical nonmonogamy. He has thrown off the shackles of traditional (or religious) expectations of what a relationship is, declaring that as long as everything either party does is consensual and okayed by their partner (i.e. there is “permission”) it is not a “sin”. Breaking the trust necessary for this kind of relationship to work is the only serious offense (or “felony”).

Kanye should be commended for setting up such clear, reasonable boundaries! Dan Savage would approve. Most churches would not

This may also be a reference to Dostoevsky’s “The Grand Inquisitor” passage of The Brothers Karamazov:

We shall tell them that every sin will be expiated, if it is done with our permission…we shall allow or forbid them to live with their wives and mistresses, to have children or not to have them…and they will submit to us gladly and cheerfully.

No, we generally must educate ourselves about polyamory

Some religions may (unofficially! At least in the US!) condone polygamy, but that’s a distinctly different arrangement with top-down rules from the man in the sky. ‘Ye makes it pretty clear that he and his ladies will make their own, thx.

Of course, any respectable pastor wouldn’t preach the philosophies of either of the two tattoos listed above.

“Wavin' Flag” is a song by Somali-Canadian rapper K'Naan. It was chosen as Coca-Cola’s anthem for the 2010 World Cup, who requested a new “Celebration Mix” recording that omitted certain lyrics

It would be odd for Bloods to wave the Somali flag, seems more like a crip thing:

These lines are exemplary of Grae in self-reflective mode, critically examining the motives behind and utility of her own (ultimately self-) destructive behavior. She recognizes that by shutting down communication and her own emotions, she protects herself from pain and depression (subjects she’s memorably addressed before) but ultimately dehumanizes herself. On the other side, she’s also dehumanizing her partner and picking futile fights towards the same ends.

Maya Angelou is a widely acclaimed poet, novelist, and veteren of the civil rights movement. She recited her poem “On the Pulse of Morning” at Bill Clinton’s presidential inauguration.

Marlon Brando was a supremely talented and somewhat wacky and unpredictable method actor. He is noted for his Oscar-winning performance as Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather and motorcycle gang member/general hellraiser Johnny in The Wild One (in which he was asked “what are you rebelling against, Johnny?” and memorably replied “Whaddya got?”)

Brando was a bit more pointed in his rebellion off-screen, suporting civil rights through participation in the March on Washington and Freedom Rides. He boycotted the 1973 Academy Awards ceremony over Hollywood’s racist depictions of American Indians and the ongoing attacks at Wounded Knee. American Indian activist Sacheen Littlefeather accepted the best actor Oscar on his behalf, made some improvised comments after producers threatened to have her arrested if she went through with plans to read a lengthy speech Brando had prepared. The Academy promptly banned any future award acceptance by proxy.

Brando was known for his increasingly eccentric behavior in his later years, and his close friendship with none other than Michael Jackson
