Oscar Grant was shot in the back and killed by BART police officer Johannes Mehserle in Oakland, California on New Year’s Day 2009. At the time of the shooting, Grant was prostrate (though allegedly “resisting arrest”) and unarmed.

The shooting was captured on tape, and many outraged demonstrations against police violence followed. Mehserle was eventually found guilty only of involuntary manslaughter (and not guilty of not guilty of second degree murder and voluntary manslaughter, with which he was also charged) after his lawyer argued that Mehserle had fired his gun by accident, and had actually meant to tase Grant.
