Sacraments are a visible sign of inward grace. The sacraments of the Protestant churches are baptism and the Lord’s Supper (Eucharist); the sacraments of the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches are baptism, confirmation, the Eucharist, matrimony, repentance, holy orders, and extreme unction.

Our character is taking all the steps towards forgiveness, but continues to fail. By being “scattered on the pavement”, it means he messed up. Maybe saying he sinned or went back to his old way of life.

This references both the act of communion and the story of Jesus turning water into wine.

Communion is a common act among Christian churches across the world. It is based off the story of The Last Supper, where Jesus and his disciples drank wine and ate bread before his crucifixion. Wine is symbolic for the blood of Christ, as bread is to the body of Christ.

Throughout the song, the story involves a character being involved in troubling situations. These lines could allude to the fact that he’s back in Church partaking in communion, but he doesn’t feel like he’s forgiven for his actions.

These four lines are creating a metaphor, comparing life to driving along a road.

You’ve been driving down a road for miles, but have no clue where you are going. There are signs giving you places to go, but you still have nowhere to go. A metaphor for living your life without knowing what you are going to do. There are many occupations, religions, lifestyles, etc. you could take part in, but none make sense to you. So you keep driving down the road, or living your life, trying to find your way. A feeling I’m sure everyone can relate to.

The next two lines continue this metaphor. While your driving in your car, your headlights go out and you find out you are driving on the wrong side of the road. Translating this to the context of the metaphor, you hit a point in your life when you realize you are on the wrong path. Your headlights going out could represent some sort of rock bottom. This could relate to Larry going to jail. Larry hit his rock bottom in there, and saw he needed to change.

Communication during any revolution is extremely difficult, as you are fighting against the same people who are supplying the tools you use to communicate. Lenin and his revolutionaries were on a much larger scale then say what Castro led with the Cuban Revolution, not to mention technology was much less advanced, so communication was difficult.

The government in Russia was listening to their conversations, and even shutting down any means of them communicating completely.
