This is a reference to an event in the bible, “The Temptation of Christ”

It is mentioned throughout the bible:

Luke 4:2
where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. (NIV)

(Read the full story here, Found in Matthew 4:1-11)

The interesting thing about this is that Jesus was tempted in the Judaean Desert. The last time I checked, desert’s weren’t cold.

I would leave my coat at home.

This is again a reference to Dr. D Wayne and his part in the February Revolution. I think as anyone could imagine, it would be very cold in Russia, especially in winter.

As also mentioned before, conditions were extremely rough. Those taking part in the overthrow of Nicholas II must have been very tempted to just give up.

It’s interesting to take note at how Larry continues to compare D. Wayne with Jesus, referring him to his “redeemer” and now comparing his struggle in the revolution to the temptation of Christ.

Larry answers his own question here. Whether the answer is yes or no, he needs something. That may as well be a positive place such as church.

On the next track on this album, Speed At The Sound of Loneliness, there is a skit featuring Larry love and D. Wayne talking. D. Wayne ask Larry if he’d like to go get a cup of coffee, to which Larry replies

Wayne we haven’t been out this long to be drinking coffee

This could hint at many things. The most likely scenario is that D. Wayne and Larry are just getting out of jail.

With this, maybe Larry is looking to change his life and not make the same mistakes he previously made.

Definitely a tiger. I saw “Scarface” when I was a kid, ever since they became my favorite animal and I’ve always wanted one.

(If you are confused, Tony the main character in Scarface, buys a tiger and keeps it as a pet)

I.V. Lenin, more commonly refereed to as Vladimir Lenin, was a Russian Communist. He was the head of the of government of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic from 1917, and of the Soviet Union from 1922 until his death in 1924.

A leader of the communist revolution in Russia, Lenin became a poster boy for communist propaganda.

The “man” refereed to is The Very Reverend Dr. D. Wayne Love. Lenin and his faction the “Bolsheviks” were in a conflict with Nicholas II in what later became known as the “February Revolution”. A very bloody and violent conflict, it’s estimated that 1,443 were killed.

Conditions were extremely harsh for those among the Bolsheviks which is alluded to. Rats are ugly enough, but hunchback rats?

Larry is simply posing the question, can someone who has been involved in such a conflict be his redeemer?

One of Lenin’s speeches is later sampled on the 5th track of this album, entitled “Bourgeoisie Blues”.

The first track on Alabama 3’s debut album “Exile On Coldharbour Lane”. It introduces the two main characters of the album, Larry Love and The Very Reverend Dr. D. Wayne Love. The entire album is told from the perspective of Larry Love.

As the title implies, this song is about Larry and him finding god. Luckily for him, he has Dr. D. who is a preacher himself and even has his own church. This song shows Larry joining the Reverend’s church, which is a recurring topic throughout the album.

“Exile On Coldharbour Lane” is the debut album from Alabama 3. It was released on November 11th, 1997.

A concept album, it tells the story of Larry Love and his relationship with his preacher The Very Reverend Dr. D. Wayne Love. The album revolves around many themes, from Communism to Christianity to drug use.

The cover and title pay homage to The Rolling Stone’s 1972 LP “Exile on Main St.”.

“Coldharbour Lane” is a road in South London, leading from the cities of Camberwell to Brixton. Brixton is notorious for being an impoverished area, full of criminal activity and drugs. These themes appear frequently throughout the album. It’s also the home of Alabama 3.

It did not sell well, but received positive reviews from critics when it was released, getting an 8.9 from Pitchfork
