Jay’s father was a great role model, until he left.
Jay speaks very highly of him in Decoded, which makes the loss even more potent.
Also notice the play on words. The streets provided a place to crash at. He’s saying the streets provided another home for him. The streets being a places where accidents aka crashes literally do take place. Slick double-entendre.
Jay-Z echoes this same idea on “Made In America.”
Also, according to Jay’s childhood friend DeHaven, he and his mom allowed Jay to move in with them after Jay’s mom kicked him out of the house (which Jay mentioned in “Soon You’ll Understand”). A place to “crash” at is a place to sleep at/reside in and DeHaven put Jay onto the street life so that’s what Jay’s likely referring to in these lines
