With Nas’s opening line, he wants you to first envision a world where weed is completely legal. According to ACLU’s original analysis, marijuana arrests now account for over half of all drug arrests in the United States, a racial bias was also revealed:

Nationwide, the arrest data revealed one consistent trend: significant racial bias. Despite roughly equal usage rates, Blacks are 3.73 times more likely than whites to be arrested for marijuana.

The legalization of marijuana in America, as of July 2015, is still a widely debated topic even though there are a vast number of states where the usage in some form is legal.

Interestingly, It Was Written was released in July 1996. California passed the Compassionate Use Act of 1996 on November 5, 1996, thus becoming the first state to legalize medical marijuana after a voting process.

All those rappers you see toting the whole “thug persona”, are putting on an act..

Funnily enough, in Decoded Jay was very clear on the point that rappers are playing a role, and that the “Jay-Z” persona is one that he made up in order to better tell a story that was both informative and entertaining.

An interpolation of the song entitled, “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday”, popularized after Boyz II Men did a cover of it.

Vocally, when Alicia Keys sings, “It’s so hard,” it may sound somewhat similar to how Boyz II Men sing it. Take a listen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtkbfkmW808#t=124

(In contrast, with regard to the same phrase, “Goodbye”’s sequence goes from B-24 to C#-38 to B-36. On the other hand, “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday”’s sequence is B-24, C#-26, G#-33.)

That being said, both songs apply to anyone who must leave someone behind. As Alicia is expressing throughout the song, it is unimaginably difficult (especially when it’s her first love).

The year was 2001, and Hov had released 6 albums to this point including The Blueprint, which he most likely is referring to as one of the three classics. The other two are probably Reasonable Doubt of course, and Volume 2 Hard Knock Life. Now Volume 2 isn’t an extremely popular choice as a classic, but on his birthday last year, Jigga ranked his best albums in order with Volume 2 being placed at #4 respectfully. Alongside it was a parenthesis labeled (classic). The other albums Jay thinks are classics are Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint and The Black Album (2003).
Of course, we don’t know if Jay was talking about these albums as classic, since this was released in 2001 and Hov ranked the albums in 2013.

A venture away from normal production(P-Diddy was ex. producer) and a underwhelming performance from Meth led to this album being a let down for most.
