A heel-toe kick is a method of playing double strokes on bass drums or other instruments where pedals are being used. The technique allows the drummer to play two strokes in a single motion, and is often used in speed-drumming competitions.

Compared to a classical symphony, the heel-toe kick has a significantly faster pace, i.e. the girl in the song prefers to live the fast life rather than having a “slow” and normal lifestyle.
This may not be intentional, but after “She only lusted the heel…” there is a small pause before the “…toe kick to the symphony”, which makes the first half of the line sound like “She only lusted to heal”. This might be a clever way to make us think that the girl wishes to change her lifestyle for the better, but then the second half of the line reveals that she just wants to live the fast life.

To sing the blues is an expression developed from the blues, a musical form in which songs often deal with difficulties and depression.

Just by looking at her, Deacon can sing her blues, i.e. see her inner pains, struggles and sufferings.

Also, throughout the song, Deacon is rapping about the girl and her experiences, so he is literaly singing her blues.

Josephine Baker was an American-born French singer, dancer, and actress. She was the first African-American female to become a world famous entertainer and lived a very glamorous life.

Baker droped out of school at the age of 12 and began living on the street. To survive, she scavenged food in garbage cans and danced on street corners. This attracted her a lot of attention, and she ended up being recruited to the vaudeville stage at the age of 15. Later on, she moved to France, where she found fame as an exotic dancer.

The girl in the song, who is described as an unhappy, but talented, stripper, probably sees parallels between her own life and the life of Josephine Baker. She hopes to someday escape her current situation and move on to live a more glamorous lifestyle.

There are also several similarities between Josephine Baker and Penny from Good Times (See the previous line), which gives us an ever greater picture of the girl in the song and her childhood. Both Penny and Baker grew up without father figures, and were abused as children. They were even abused in virtually the same way: Penny was burned by her mother with an iron simply out of aggression, and Baker was burned by the woman she was working for when she put too much soap in the laundry.

Josephine Baker is often credited as a source of inspiration for several writers, including Langston Hughes who is mentioned later in the verse.

It’s fair to say that Deacon didn’t just choose a random successful woman to describe the girl’s ambitions and dreams.

In the 1970s sitcom Good Times, Millicent “Penny” Gordon Woods is abandoned by her father at a young age. Later on she is also abandoned by her abusive mother, resulting in her being adopted.

The character of Penny was played by a young Janet Jackson, who has later grown to become one of the world’s most known sex symbols.

Deacon uses the sitcom to describe how the girl suddenly changed when she eventually began blossoming.

The 12th track off of Cunninlynguists‘ 4th album, Dirty Acres (2007).

In the first verse, Deacon paints us a detailed picture of a girl, most likely a stripper. Natti then continues the story about the girl, but uses the second half of his verse to explain how everyone is a “stripper” dancing for something. The last line of his verse sums up the song’s message perfectly.

And no, the Janet Jackson referances in Deacon’s verse aren’t a reach:
