Common refers to a gun as a ‘toaster’ instead of the typical ‘burner’. It seems like the cops are wary of Com' and his friend being armed and dangerous.

Either the police car lights or a flashlight are being shone straight into Common’s eyes, which are very sensitive now due to the marijuana. The drug causes the pupils to dilate, letting more light in than the usual.

Of course what they’re doing is illegal, so they’re trying to fix themselves up and look presentable. They’re also hoping to air out the car so it doesn’t smell of weed. Com also adds a little detail to the story – he and his friend came through hell already the same day and seemingly were trying to unwind.

According to Urban Dictionary, a Box Chevy is an “early to mid-eighties Chevrolet Caprice or Malibu, usually seen riding on dubs or bigger.” The dude Common’s riding with in it is pushing rock steady from his Box Chevy, i.e., crack cocaine a.k.a base.

Rocksteady’s also a Jamaican genre of music known for its distinctive basslines, which will easily give windows a run for their money. Also, whenever he dropped off a lot of cocaine (dropped his base heavy), he might’ve had people – base heads – knocking on his window for it, problems with the car windows etc., making them shake. Shake could also refer to, essentially, weed crumbs, which sets up latter parts of the song.

Produced by frequent collaborator No I.D., this has been dubbed as a lost Common song and possibly a leftover track from The Dreamer, The Believer. It samples Ike Turner & The Kings of Rhythm’s “Getting Nasty,” which was also used in the Jurassic 5’s “Concrete Schoolyard.” It’s a tale of the cops versus the blacks.

Some girl must have been trippin' because Kendrick made Ali, Kendrick’s studio engineer, kick her out. XXL actually asked Ali exactly what happened. He said that:

It was really happening. It was actually somebody from another session. Somebody came in and was drinking a little too much and started getting loud and we had to get ’em up outta there. One of them random things that happens in the studio.

Produced and mixed by !llmind, “Charlie Brown” is the widely-loved lead single from Jared Evan’s EP, The 4th Chapter. If you’re a fan of Peanuts, you’ll surely recognize the similar themes of depression, bullying and a sense of (possibly pointless) optimism between the song and the comic.
