Harlow is nothing close to an overnight success story. He has been releasing full length mixtapes since he was a young teenager—although some were released under a different alias at the time. Back in 2011, he released Extra Credit, a project mainly filled with remixes of hot songs at the time and some other tracks with pretty low production value. However, it showed he was serious about chasing his dream.

He would go on to release a more well produced, and more fleshed out, project in 2014 titled Finally Handsome. Then, in 2015, he would release The Handsome Harlow EP which is the earliest project of his currently on major streaming services and was the project that really started to gain him traction in his hometown of Louisville. With this traction, he started to be able to book some smaller venues around the region for concerts.

As mentioned on his track “River Road”, Harlow and his crew used to travel to some of these shows in a Sprinter Van:

In and out the Sprinter van, pull up, get the levels right

One specific show in Alabama from his Gazebo tour only had 8 fans in attendance:

Ending three consecutive lines of NBA references, Jack uses another sly name-drop—this time to NBA player Hassan Whiteside.

He uses this name-drop to play off the themes of the previous line about Rajon Rondo. Although Harlow and Rondo are both from Louisville, KY, they hail from different parts of the city. Harlow grew up in the Highlands neighborhood of Louisville, which is a predominantly “white side” of town.

John Stockton is the NBA’s all time leader in assists. An assist is the act of passing the ball to a teammate, allowing them to score. Just as Stockton could pass the ball whenever he wanted, Jack can pass up on girls any time he wants because he has many girls to choose from. The term “pass” could also be a reference to passing girls to his friends, allowing them to get with the girls he’s not interested in.

At the time of this song’s release, Harlow had a very specific and easy-to-spot style that is often highlighted in his music by his love for rocking New Balance.

However, Harlow apparently isn’t a fan of the clothing brand PacSun. Playing off the similar sound of the words “Pac” and “Pack”, he goes on to talk about being high from smoking weed—or a pack— before going to the St. Matthew’s Mall in Louisville.
