The “they” here gives us our first clue that the narrator is not telling the story of this hookup just to brag. In fact, he’s being questioned by the police.

There has been much debate by people in Memphis as to which exact bathroom is being referenced (if, in fact, it is a real bathroom). Many tend to think that the bathroom referenced is the one at the old Hi-Tone, a divey rock club that has since changed locations.
Though, really, it could be anywhere.

Here Finn makes explicit the connection between his beloved St. Paul, Minnesota and the Saint who gave the city its name. The ambiguous use of Saints in his lyrics is a hallmark of Finn’s work

Saint Paul, or Paul the Apostle, was one of the most notable early christian missionaries. His “hard luck” may be due to the fact that he was imprisoned by the Romans for spreading the teachings of Jesus, or possibly because of the city named after him.

NPR, with some help from Finn, broke down this dense couplet a while back

Nelson Algren was an American writer best known for his bleak account of drug addiction The Man with the Golden Arm

The “Paddy” here is Patrick Costello of St. Paul’s Dillinger Four, a band much beloved and often referenced by THS

“The Dead End Alley” is, says NPR, “the house lived in by members of Dillinger Four and the location of parties and shows attended by the Hold Steady’s Craig Finn”

And, finally, the whole stanza is a nod to lyric on D4’s song “DoubleWhiskeyCokeNoIce”: “Nelson Algren came to me and said celebrate the ugly things”

Finn must really love that particular D4 song, as he would later shout it out on “Constructive Summer”
