Since at least the 1960’s, the so-called Christian right in the United States has been affiliated with the Republican party

This trend started as a reaction against the 1960’s counterculture, and was intensified by Richard Nixon’s Southern strategy in 1968, which played on racist fears of Southern whites in order to get them to abandon the Democratic party, to which they had historically belonged. Rick Perlstein’s superb book Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America gives a blow-by-blow account of this process

Proponents of the Republican party tend to champion conservative values that over lap with Christian values, such as opposite sex marriage or a pro-life stance.

Religion tells us that Accepting Jesus is only one step to salvation, we must also go to church, follow the rules, avoid sin, ask for forgiveness daily.

Jesus tells us something different. He tells us IT IS FINISHED. its done. Your simple belief in HIM is all it takes. Your unworthyness is replaced by his Grace, so that when God looks at you he sees the pure goodness of Jesus Christ and nothing else.

Religion tells you that you have to work for it, Jesus says “I already did.”

But Paul says we must work out our salvation. I am saved by Christ’s work alone on the cross, and no amount of working on my part will change that. But we have been called to become a servant of Christ, a part of the Body of Christ, and use the gifts he gives us to accomplish the mission of God in the lost world. Jesus even said, “As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.”

Ephesians 2:8…“I am saved by grace, not works.” But Ephesians 2:10…“I am God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus TO DO GOOD WORKS.”
