…And Then a dramatic silence in the vein of John Cage’s “4'33”.
I figure this is a statement on the relationship of the Silver Jews, Pavement, and Jicks (which Earl comments upon). I’m not well-informed about Art so I can’t give great detail about who goes to each part. If I had to guess:
The “Oh” is an ideogrammatic reference in the vein of Ezra Pound, signifying the Silver Jews as an eternally-recurring fact (the circle), beside the sixth letter of the alphabet (‘h’), which maybe refers to Socrates, the sixth positioned character in Plato’s “Symposium,” which is on the subject of love (Note: Berman of the “Jews” wrote a variation on this work with “Actual Air”). Frequently, an artist uses letters to this effect so there is a pleasure in both hearing and reading the message. As well, being a work of love, it reminds me of a poet beginning with “O, insertnamehere!” However, the effect is subdued when spoken aloud by Earl.
‘Nigga thought’ is a comment on Tyler (from the previous song, “Couch,” as well as from a lyric from a song that goes something along the lines of “Nigga, what the fuck, am I…thinking?”) as well as on Shakespeare’s “Othello,” a rendition of Plato’s “Apology.” The title breaks along similar lines: [Nigga]/[Thought] ~ [o, t!]/[hello]. I think this applies to Pavement because they frequently use Shakespearean motifs in their songs—as well as lyrics speaking as much to the effect of race in America.
“He Killed Me” I think is a reference to the early “Slay Tracks” song “You’re Killing Me” insofar as they break down the middle of “Killing.” So by this effect, Earl is stating the “ed[ucation]” he has received from the “Jicks.” I dunno, maybe it means going all the way back to basics b/c “You’re Kill ing Me” is the very first track on the the very first ep by Pavement.
So along these lines, Earl is stating the ‘myth’ of the Silver Jews, Pavement, Jicks.
But then moving onto the second stanza, it can be treated similarly; It seems to be an advance into the mythos of the story by indicating how, even when it is disagreed with (which the rebellious lyrics of OF often exemplify in stark relief), inserts itself as a common predicable grammar. This stanza, then, in it’s entirety, can be taken as the second line above, ‘nigga thought’ (which previously mentioned, was/is signification of Pavement).
So then the drama silence. A piece of education on John Cage from Earl, indicating how the total silence thing is what is remembered about John Cage. Perhaps this is a comment on the crazy technics of music, insofar as the Jicks are kinda damned to fame, as they will some day be recognized as an event which went by uncommented upon.
