This was a limited edition model was introduced in Hong Kong at this year’s first Watches & Wonders exhibition. It comes with the full perpetual calendar works, including a moon-phase, leap year, day, outsize date, day/night indicator, and a month display, situated around the periphery of the dial with the current month marked by a small arrow at the 6 o’clock position.

Nothing said could really do this watch justice. It’s the perfect mix of technological brilliance and flawless design. Notice that nothing is overlapping here, which greatly enhances dial readability. Also, the hand-finished engraving is just beautiful. Probably my favorite watch to look at, in all honesty.

I chose the “secret” rather than the other quadruple tourbillon model – which fully displays the two double tourbillons (see below) – because I like the sense of discretion. The biggest trend in watchmaking is to display the tourbillon, which is cool and all, but it’s getting to be a bit ridiculous at this point. So I respect the fact that GF chose to release something a bit more traditional along with it’s mad invention pieces. It’s one of those “insider” things I suppose…if you’re wearing a GF, all the bells and whistles are unnecessary.

Nonetheless, tourbillons are pretty fucking cool to watch in action, so check out this video of the…non-secret (?) quadruple tourbillon model to get an idea of what’s going on behind that dial:

Greubel Forsey Website

GF routinely wins awards at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève and their own time-keeping standards are higher than those of the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute, which is responsible for certifying high-end watch movements.

Simply put, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey are making the most innovative and exquisitely finished watches on the market. Since they only produce about 50 or so a year, I would imagine the waiting list for one of these is about the same as for Packers season tickets

Take a look at their other (incredible) quadruple tourbillon model:

A. Lange & Söhne Website

Considering how young this brand is, all that they’ve accomplished is really pretty amazing. Lange may have been responsible for the renewed interest (obsession almost..) for in-house movements, after dropping the Datograph in ‘99.

What’s so great about Lange is that they tend to offer the best second-market (resale) value for buyers. It’s still not a very well known watchmaker among the average buyer, which means you can get a much nicer watch for a lot less money then if you were looking to get a Patek Philippe, a brand which just about every buyer is familiar with.

This phase connects the nerve impulse (excitation) and the muscle action (contraction). At this point, the stimulus has traveled down the neuron to the motor end-plate, spreads along the sarcolemma and down the T-tubules, and has stimulated the sarcoplasmic reticulum to release calcium ions.

These calcium ions bind to the troponin molecules located on the actin, which opens up a binding site for the myosin cross-bridges to attach.

Note: Potential force production in the muscle depends directly on how many myosin cross-bridges are attached at any one moment

Calcium is stored in the sarcoplasmic reticulum and very few – if any – myosin cross-bridges are bound to the actin filaments, which means there is little or no tension in the muscle.

Patek Philippe Website

If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, then Patek is certainly a man’s closest companion. Tchaikovsky and Albert Einstein were some of the proud owners of a Patek Philippe watch. Patek’s regularly fetch close to a million dollars at auctions today.

The Patek Philippe museum is a pilgramage that every watch aficionado hopes to make in their life.

$11 million Patek watch.

The art deco style isn’t for everyone, but personally, I love it. The Gondolo is a beautiful demonstration of traditional styling mixed with the latest technological innovations. This bad boy has a power reserve of 8 days!

Breguet used to get name-dropped way back in the day. Alexandre Dumas mentions the manufacturer’s old minute repeater pocketwatch a few times in The Count of Monte Cristo.

Danglars' watch, one of Breguet’s repeaters, which he had carefully wound up on the previous night, struck half past five. Without this, Danglars would have been quite ignorant of the time, for daylight did not reach his cell.

This Classique is a monument to stunning hand-finished quality. The date is displayed at 6 o’clock on a dial adorned with a sunburst guilloché motif, in which each of the rays corresponds to a date. The day of the week and leap-year indications appear opposite each other at 3:30 and 8:30 respectively. Via WCL:

In our watch collecting life, we have perused and owned fantastic references and unbelievable timepieces that are just a work of art; nevertheless, this is a watch that takes your breath away and leaves you in awe like no other watch we’ve reviewed so far.
