I’ll admit, a watch is not the only way we can tell the time now-a-days. 99% of the population now use their cellphone when they want to see what time it is. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but I’d just like to point out that they used to have these things called pocketwatches…and then they invented the wristwatch.

Also, no one wants to see you fumbling through your pockets in search of your phone when they ask you the time. 0 swags.

Everything you wear makes a statement about yourself. In an era where a watch is no longer necessary to tell the time, it becomes even more essential. Shoes are an important aspect of your wardrobe, yes, but any dweeb can pick out a nice pair of shoes. A good watch, on the other hand, is about more than just the latest fashion trend.

One reason for this is the position of black men in society, i.e. low on the totem pole. Even a successful career and loads of cash isn’t enough to increase their status relative to the white folks who’ve been havin' money.

Few artists have explained this phenomena in more depth than the two most high-brow artists in the game, Jay Z and Kanye West:

Man I promise, I’m so self-conscious
That’s why you always see me
with at least one of my watches
Rollies and Pasha’s done drove me crazy

-Kanye

New money, they looking down on me
Blue bloods they trying to clown on me

-Jay Z

So instead, they wear more diamonds than the Queen of England…

Initially, the wristwatch was revered by rappers in the same spirit as the diamond chain; it was simply another accessory that could be conveniently bling’d out.

Later, maximum bling-age took a back seat to the all-important dropping of exclusive brand names. Still superficial, but a welcomed change nonetheless.

Eventually, artists will respect the watch for what it truly is: a mechanical work of art.

Virtually everyone has explicitly agreed to work towards peace. The catch here is that Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has refused to come to the table on multiple occasions unless two of his demands are met:

  1. Recognition of Israel as a Jewish State (post-1967 borders).
  2. Future demilitarization of Palestine.

He has also made other moves that question his commitment to peaceful agreements. After becoming PM in 2009, Netanyahu began evicting Palestinians from East Jerusalem and demolishing their homes. He has also led a significant surge in the occupation of Palestinian territories since 2010. Some say these actions essentially eliminate the possibility of a two-state solution.

This is all despite increasing worldwide criticism of the occupation since 2011.

Israel has been isolated in the Middle East since its establishment, despite the region’s strong history of peaceful cultural heterogeneity.

The Middle East has seen numerous changes in the structure of power, and its people – large populations of Jews, Christians, and Muslims – have always adapted well and coexisted. The difference in modern-day Israel, as professor of Middle East studies Alan Taylor points out, is its firm roots in Zionist thought:

Formerly, the introduction and passing of empires and foreign controls still left the pattern of social continuity intact in the region. Embodied in Zionist thought, however, was an idea of exclusiveness, of separateness from the region, which was foreign in its very essence to the society and culture of the Middle East.

Kerry has generally taken the anti-war position throughout his political career, stemming from his involvement with the Vietnam Veterans Against War in the early 1970’s.

Although he did vote to give President Bush the authorization of force before the invasion of Iraq, he made clear that an all out war was not what he was lending support for:

I voted to do the responsible thing for America which was to have a threat of force to hold Saddam Hussein accountable and to..show the diplomatic skill..to show the patience to build the legitimacy and consent of the world for what you are doing..I warned the president..‘do not rush to war, take the time to build the coalition, because it’s not winning the war that’s hard, it’s winning the peace that’s hard.’

That last part is particularly relevant in this case. It’s easy to flex your muscles – especially when America pays for them – but it’s much more meaningful to work towards peaceful relations.

Part of the reason for this is Chopard’s pedigree in fine jewelry. Before rappers started to appreciate the subtleties of fine watch-making, many of them kept their wrists on cool with the Chopard.

Notice the hand-graved finishing, here. This is significant for two reasons: (1) the Only Watch charity is to raise money for those suffering from muscular dystrophy, hence the DNA molecule, and; (2) this design was crafted using the Fleurisanne or “filet” engraving technique, which is a historical specialty of the village of Fleurier in the Swiss Jura. It is an artistic craft that has almost disappeared despite an indelible connection to watchmaking’s past.
