Photokeratitis is the result of excessive exposure of the eye to UV light. It’s essentially a sunburn on the cornea and results in diminished vision, and intense pain and discomfort of the eyes. Aside from sun exposure, it’s also common in welders who do not wear proper eye-protection while working.

Mufasa was Simba’s father in The Lion King. He was killed by his brother, Scar, so that Scar could steal the throne and rule Pride Rock in his place.

Crixus was a Gladiator in Ancient Rome. He was one of the leaders of a slave rebellion and was killed in battle in 72 B.C. His part in the rebellion has resulted in him appearing as a character in many works of historical fiction, most notably Stanley Kubrick’s 1960 classic “Spartacus” as well as the Starz TV series “Spartacus”

This is NoEmotion’s second reference to the film “Forrest Gump” in this song. Coincidentally, Forrest Gump was also released in 1994 – the same year as The Lion King.

Interesting wordplay with “follow” and “lead” – what he’s really saying here though is that you can’t live your life vicariously through celebrities and the media. If you’re spending all your time worrying about what Kanye and Kim, or Miley Cyrus, or whoever else is doing then that’s all energy that you could spend doing your own thing and living the kind of life you want to.

Rafiki is the name of the Mandrill in The Lion King. He speaks with an almost caricature-like exaggerated African accent, often providing wisdom and insight to the hero, Simba. He often speaks in riddles and proverbs, and refers to himself in the third-person. Various clips of his dialogue from the film are spliced into the chorus after each of NoEmotion’s repetitions of the line.

Cacti are among the most durable and resilient plants on earth, able to grow in dry desert conditions.

It’s possible NoEmotion is making an allusion to himself with this line: he’s able to thrive without the nourishment of other people – the constant praise, fame, and adoration that an unmasked artist would receive – and grow his unorthodox art in even the harshest conditions.

The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company Restaurant and Market is a seafood restaurant chain inspired by the 1994 film Forrest Gump. As of September 2010, thirty-two Bubba Gump restaurants operate worldwide.
