The first social networking site that we want to take a look at is Facebook. Facebook at the current time is probably the most popular social networking site available. Creating a Facebook profile allows you to have a presence within the social networking. media. It allows you to connect with old friends, current friends, as well as make new internet acquaintances. Facebook gives me the ability to post status updates. I can post as many or as few status updates as I would like, and the purpose of a status update is jus to let your friends know what’s on your mind. let them know how your day is going, even share funny things that may have happened. People use Facebook for different reasons and to each his or her own. Basically we can use it how we want to use it. It makes it very Simple to share photo albums and upload videos for all of their friends to see. In fact we can upload information and create a link and send it to users who are not on Facebook, so it provides a unique storage capability for web albums and video. Creating a profile on Facebook is extremely simple and easy. And basically all you really need is an email account that’s active so that you can respond when Facebook sends you a verification email. You can add additional information later but at first you really don’t need a whole lot. The different types of information that can be included in your profile Or your contact information for instance name, address, phone number, those kinds of things. Your bio and really you can put any information that you want about yourself. Favorite quotes and things like that, political and religious views. Likes, interest, education, employment, and many, many others. Again, you see different people using it for different purposes. Some people put very little in the profile. Some people’s profile reads like a book because there’s so much information there. You can pick and choose what you want to provide. One thing to think about when using Facebook or any social networking site for that matter is privacy. The default settings in Facebook really need to be looked at. They may not provide the privacy that we require. You have the option of sharing status. As public information or you can restrict it. You can restrict it to people only in your immediate network, friends only, friends of friends, or everyone. We want to be careful that we know who can see. Especially thing like pictures, video, contact information and the like, because we want to make sure we remain protected. For instance, if my status and my contact information is available to the world, then I wouldn’t want my status to be ‘I’m going on vacation for two weeks’, when in my contact information it has my name and my address. Those are not good ideas. Other privacy, things to think about, is just some stuff, should probably not even be mentioned. Like your birth year. It’s just not that important. And Facebook can unfortunately open you up to some identity theft, if we’re not careful. So, it’s a great medium for social networking and communication, we just have to be clear on how to use it and how to set those privacy controls. That’s why we’re gonna walk through this in the demonstration, again It is right now the most popular social networking site out there and so we’ll take a little bit of time to create a Facebook profile and go through and look at how to use this social networking medium.
