Kendrick takes a calm approach to addressing a difficult issue. Why was hip-hop in it’s purest form seemingly neglected by the Grammys? Macklemore has been called “more of a pop artist than pure rapper” and this is the root of the debate..

What Kendrick did on good kid, m.A.A.d city was grace us with a throwback rap album…it borrowed roots from L.A. greats like 2Pac and Dr. Dre. It told the story of the streets of L.A. (the birthplace of gangster rap) from an emotional perspective..A story we hadn’t heard told with this type of eloquence in a long time. This was a story that had best gained notoriety when it was told by gangster rappers, but Kendrick brought it back on this record.

The Grammys had a chance to respect that accomplishment, but the award went in a different direction. one can’t help but sypmathize with Kendrick’s claim of the Grammys not recognizing REAL rap when it was right in front of their face.

The pensive state of the female character is best captured in the below video for “Sonsick” done by La Blogothéque, a French site known for their creative music videos.

In the opening shot, singer Rae Cassidy is strolling through the Parisian night and you can almost imagine her having this back and forth debate inside of her head. Her eyes twinkle in the dimly lit, cobblestone-lined thoroughfare and the rest is magical:

Now, we see not as much her uneasiness, but the actual struggle that she’s going through in her mind to maintain her composure in this charade. She’s doing her best to resist the urge to fall for this guy (or anybody for that matter) and is pep talking herself into staying the course.

The ultimate way to get the listener thinking. He’s unsure of his fate, as he doesn’t know what the end result of committing to a particular idea is. It’s a very existential take by Koenig and he humors us. In an interview with NME, Koenig stated:

Even though that song has some heavy themes about trying to figure out your place in the world and what you believe in and how your beliefs affect your relationships to other people, we don’t mind goofing off a little bit.

This is it right here. Humor in the unknown. Good or bad, who cares?

Singer Ezra Koenig spent four months living in LA before making this record and seriously considered quitting the band. So he definitely was dealing with ambivalence about Vampire Weekend’s success. The ambivalence trickles into a philosophical debate about the fate of love juxtaposed with religion.
