In an interview, Herring explained:

I was going through a breakup at the time. It was about five months after we split up and we weren’t really talking or anything.

Winter symbolizes the heartbreak from the past relationship that has been lost, while summer symbolizes an acceptance of the end. Despite the warming feeling of getting over the breakup, a part of him will always remember and crave his ex-lover.

In an interview, Herring explained:

That second verse is just like “people change and some people don’t.” You know, it’s a simple sentiment and lyrically that’s what I try to do with a lot of our songs, is playing with cliche and turning it over.

It’s almost as if we sensed the inevitability of a break-up from the beginning of the song and here it is. His attempts to roll with this muse fell short and he blames it on an empty soul….hers.

It’s the feeling when you have a relationship in front of you, but you run off to discover more about yourself and figure it out if this is really what you want out of life. Unfortunately for the song’s subject, people almost never come back to claim what they should have kept.
