Kendrick repeats “What else?” in the same way Jay Z did on DJ Khaled’s 2016 song “I Got The Keys”:

My baby Blue (What else?)
I dream in color (What else?)
That’s too much flavor (What else?)

Kendrick employs this technique to continue his “sonning” of Drake, who recently boasted he has ways to make more money than he currently does through rapping. In addition, when he was dodging ghostwriting allegations in 2015, the Canadian rapper’s producer and friend Noah “40” Shebib responded by saying they make music in a genre beyond rap, where co-writing techniques are normalized. Kendrick chastises Drake for using ghostwriters during the time he was claiming to be the greatest rapper alive, and dropping subliminal diss lines directed at the self-penning Lamar.

The stylization of crumpling paper strongly suggests that Kendrick is contrasting his writing style with Drake’s. Kendrick makes audible that he constantly reviews and revises each of his lines and lyrics, rather than letting someone ghostwrite for him.

It’s likely no coincidence that this set of bars is similar to Big Sean’s on “Voices In My Head / Stick To The Plan,” where he shows signs of doubt:

Voices in my head sayin' I could do better, damn
Voices in my head sayin' that I knew better

The song can be seen as a diss towards both Sean and Drake.

The stylization of this passage is definitely reminiscent of Nas’s paper-crumpling in 2002’s “Book of Rhymes.” This continues Kendrick’s theme of comparing himself to the greats.

Large sea animals often “breach” the ocean’s surface by lifting most of their body out of the water and then crashing back down, making an enormous splash.

Much like those animals, Kendrick has emerged from the two year hiatus he’s been on since he released To Pimp a Butterfly. He plans on making a big splash with his new album.

Kendrick uses similar aquatic imagery in “Deep Water” from Dr. Dre’s 2015 album Compton. He describes Compton as an environment full of dangerous predators. His return to this theme emphasizes his continuing ties to Compton, and warns other rappers that while their lives may be endangered here, this is Kendrick’s natural habitat.

Continuing his rant on the subject’s character, he frames the subject as someone who lies about themselves, and tries to frequently play tough, when it is, in fact, a ruse.

He also accuses the subject of being a pussy, incapable of taking a joke when they kidded with him.

Usually, alcohol is sold in 40 ounce bottles, and refered to as ‘40’s’. These are great companions with weed, as a 40 and weed is just enough to get a small group of people buzzed and high.
