I think he also realizes that since there is no way to be certain of what happens of what happens after you die, he doesn’t fear it since he has no expectations. There’s actually a chance his life will be better after he dies because his life right now sucks, and he understands that it’s not possible to have an experience of nothing so there has to be life after the death of the human body.
