Since they had already finished their pack of cigarettes, Kathy decided to focus on her magazine while Paul watched the scenery pass by through the bus window. The night creates a shift in tone from their earlier jolliness. Compared with the games they played with people’s faces before, they’re more calm now and partake in their own individual activities.
This could possibly be a metaphor for the finite nature of their relationship. The warm closeness may already be cooling.
If the moon is rising, the sun is setting. The open field is the unwritten story in front of them. As the other comments say, he is saying that it is an end to the relationship.
This line has always felt to me that the relationship is starting to break up. They’re getting tired of each other, and so they each focus on something by themselves. Vague, bland little arguments like “you know we’re out of cigarettes” only help along the point.
