Ab-Soul narrates through the complications of his life; the love life he had with Alori Joh, how her death affected him, and how he does things his own way and won’t be stopped.

The smooth, jazz-influenced production came from his foreign connection, Tommy Black, who put a twist on MF DOOM’s instrumental, “Burdock Root.”

“Burdock Root” samples Bobby McFerrin’s version of “Moondance.”

He believes in God, but hasn’t ever connected with him. And if you think they have symbolically, God must hate him because his life is unrealistically tragic.

He says “ayy man” like “amen,” another play on the religious context of the lyrics.

God doesn’t like the symbolism AB put on his album cover of ‘control system. Jesus is symbolized as a fish with his name inside. AB-Soul used this symbolism and put his name inside the fish instead of Jesus.

In his tragic life he really feels like he loses everything. Hopefully neither music nor his mom is next, else he’ll go out like Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain did: by committing suicide with a shotgun to the head at the height of his career.

Also this references the “27 club” that Kurt Cobain is a part of with other musicians that had lost their life at age 27, hence before he turns 28. Other known musicians dying at age 27 include: Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison, and Jimi Hendrix.

They agreed that when they died they’d meet at a special place, just in case reincarnation actually exists. In that sense their love will really transcend space and time, which Ab draws from Leon Russell’s (or maybe Donny Hathaway’s cover) of “A Song For You.”

It also draws a parallel between the way she died and the way Hathaway died and their relationship as it pertains to “A Song for You.” Note that the next song on the album, Black Lip Bastard (Remix), samples “A Song for You” (the Donny Hathaway version).

True love, the love he has for Lori, goes further than life, that love lasts for eternity and is there in every life of reincarnation, so he’ll meet and love her again in his next life, should reincarnation exist.

They were supposed to be together until they got old and had grandchildren, but Alori reportedly committed suicide. He wants to know why God took her, but supposes God wanted her beautiful face to be displayed in heaven. He’s used to having life suck, so he’s lucky here.

“Angel” also refers to Alori Joh’s real name, Loriana Angel Johnson

The “why lord” refers back to the opening line of the song. Job never questioned “why lord,” but soul did, that’s why this is the book of soul.

Sounwave, a member of TDE’s Digi+Phonics production group, has been cool with Soulo for a minute. Ab was trying to surpass Drake, whose music (probably So Far Gone or Thank Me Later) was quite hot back then.

Also a loose play on Drake’s lyric from his song titled ‘Scriptures.’

Whereas Drake was trying to topple the living legend, Ab-Soul was more focused on being better than the guy currently in the spotlight.

From all the shit he went through, most people would go crazy, but Ab didn’t, surprisingly.

There are several possible interpretations of the phrase “crazy check”. The government gives checks to people who are sometimes mentally unstable, but it could also refer to a disability check or a “crazy” large amount of money.

Further, there have been lawsuit settlements for people who suffered from Stevens-Johnson syndrome. This one lady got $6 million!

From a bright start to an unfortunate turn of events. Steven-Johnson syndrome is a disease where the outer layer of skin (epidermis) separates from the inner cell layer (dermis) due to cell death. Warning, the pictures are graphic.

The Book of Job (joeb) is one of the books in the Hebrew Bible, it’s about the story of Job, his trials at the hands of Satan, his discussions with friends on the origins and nature of his suffering, his challenge to God, and finally a response from God. Ab-Soul thinks it should be called The Book of Soul because it relates to his life.
