My music grew up, it got Screwed Up, I got patches all on my cardigan Jay Rafael – The Zone

I, along with my music has changed drastically since I started. I’ve adopted a smoother, more adult sound from a production standpoint, and even my clothes are a little bit more grown up.

And the Screwed Up line comes from the Houston influence (Short Dawg, Bun B, Pimp C) on me, plus the H-Town influence on other artists who influenced me (Drake, A$AP Rocky)

Another reference to Drake’s verse on the original version of The Zone.

Basically, speaking to this same someone who knew me at the beginning of the whole rap thing versus knowing me now, and seeing how far I’ve come in a relatively short time with limited amounts of help.

I’ve been doing almost everything myself (save for production) since I really started in early 2011.

This from the song description:

I was sitting around a couple days ago vibing out to Thursday, and started thinking. That thinking led to writing, and this is the result. Figured I’d try my hand at my favorite song on the tape.

I originally wanted to add a sample from She Will for the chorus, but didn’t get a chance to.

The track was originally produced by Doc Mckinney and Illangelo, and then later re-produced by YearBeatz. After listening to it for a little bit, I figured the track itself was perfect for me, and I ended up knocking it out of the park.
