All Hope Is Gone is the fourth studio LP from Slipknot. It is also the final album to feature the late Paul Gray on bass and former drummer Joey Jordison. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and also has been certified Platinum. The album also spawned 5 singles with “All Hope Is Gone,” “Psychosocial,” “Dead Memories,” “Sulfur,” and “Snuff.”

All Hope is Gone is also the only studio LP from Slipknot to be completely recorded in the band’s hometown of Iowa. Members of Slipknot have later gone on the record to offer mixed opinions on the album.

That’s the only record… the only album done in Iowa, and it’s my least favorite. No tension, no pain, just efficiency. Able to go home, able to sleep… that’s not good. That’s not good for what we do.

It’s the least amount of time we spent on pre-production. Not one of my favorite records.

However, not all members shared this opinion.

I have to say that the band is at its peak; everyone—I mean everyone—is now completely involved in the writing process, and it’s a beautiful thing.

Aptly titled, Deftones' debut full-length Adrenaline was a critical success upon its release in October 1995, spawning the singles “7 Words” and “Bored”. Although the album was initially commercially unsuccessful, it helped to build the band’s dedicated fanbase through their extensive touring, and eventually went on to achieve RIAA platinum status for shipments of over one million copies.

Deftones is the self-titled fourth LP from Deftones. It was released on Maverick Records and produced entirely by the band and was the last album to feature production from Terry Date. It spawned two singles, Hexagram and Minerva and reached Gold status with over 500,000 copies sold. Deftones is much different than the band’s previous efforts due to the diverse genres it takes influence from. It introduces keyboards and synthesizers provided by Frank Delgado. The album was a critical success despite performing worse than their previous effort White Pony.

The band refers to the time period while recording this album as “the dark days”. They claim that they were all disconnected from each other, using Pro Tools to record and let them all come in separately. The subsequent tour was also hard on the band, claiming that the dark days followed them there.

The official music video for The Killers' “Smile Like You Mean It” focuses on a house and memories of events that occurred there. There is a coming to terms in this line that although that house was where the singer grew up, it has moved on to someone new and new memories will be made there but all he has left of it are the memories of his own youth. This line encompasses the entire theme of the song.

“Cold” is the second track and lead single from Crossfade’s self-titled debut LP. It is the band’s best-selling and highest charting single to date. The song deals with a lamenting Ed Sloan over his broken relationships due to his choice of music over them. In an interview on Songfacts Ed stated,

I was devoting all my time – I still devote all my time to it – but back then, I started really sinking my life into writing that first album and I noticed the distance starting to grow between my girlfriend and I and my family a little bit, as far as the time that I was able to spend.

I wrote that song after neglecting a lot of my friends, family and loved ones because of my music. Which wound up paying off, but I lost some friends because of all the time that I devoted to that record. So was me saying, ‘Listen, I’m sorry for the way that I am. I don’t mean to be this cold to you. This is what I have to do.’ And just making my apologies via song.

“Headup” is the 9th track on Deftones' sophomore LP Around the Fur. It features Max Cavalera of Soulfly on additional vocals. It was written by Max and Chino Moreno as a form of venting their pain over the loss of Max’s step-son, Dana Wells (aka D-Low), who was killed in a tragic car crash in 1996. He was also a close friend of Chino’s.

The Deftones had a super tight relationship with Dana. They had a magical thread weaving them together for their love of music.
- Gloria Cavalera (Max’s wife & Dana’s mom)

The bridge features lyrics written by D-Low:

When they called and asked Max to come to Seattle and collaborate on a track in Dana’s memory, it lifted Max and me out of the Valley of Despair. It gave us a spark of Life back…

We both flew to Seattle and hooked up with the guys and met Terry Date, who was producing Around The Fur. It was exciting to be with The Deftones. Everyone had so much positive energy. Being involved in a creation from the ground floor was like being an architect constructing his masterpiece. It wasn’t long before they were all digging on some music Max had brought with him. I pulled a surprise out also. I grabbed some lyrics I had found at home that Dana had written. They were written across a flier and said “WALKING THROUGH THIS WORLD YOU HAVE TO HOLD YOUR HEAD UP HIGH”.
- Gloria Cavalera (Max’s wife and Dana’s mother)

Max Cavalera and Chino collaborated again on Soulfly’s’s second album Primitive, on a similarly themed song: “Pain”.
