One’s heart is not something that is easily deciphered. Here the writer compares the heart to land that is difficult to traverse, unlike a prairie, which is often rolling hills or flat grasslands.

Often someone has a lot of baggage or things hidden away in their heart that they would like to forget. To get inside and learn about someone is often difficult because they’re apprehensive to letting someone in.
