Slug is such a good emcee that even in tight situations, he can always make a hit, much like a good basketball player can score baskets during a fadeaway shot, even with a defender in their face.

Rather than selling his body, he sells a part of himself through his often personal lyrics and his music, which is a large part of his life. Prostitutes show you their “pale horse” or their penis to their consumers, Slug shows off his emceeing.

The Pale Horse is a 1961 crime novel written by Agatha Christie that was adapted into a film in 1996. It’s about a secret society that murders people by replacing products they normally use with poisons or other fatal things. Slug might be saying that he’s the one killing, or dominating, the music industry.

There could be several possible interpretations to these lines;

  • The subject of the story is trying to let the rain wash himself pure from his past so he can only focus on the positive, and what’s next to come.
  • The old adage is that “every grey cloud has a silver lining”. In relation to the song, for every traumatizing past event the subject has faced, there is something inspiring that he could take from each experience. There are brighter days on his horizon, he just hast to weather the storm for the time being.
  • While all the subject may see is grey skies, they are absolutely necessary to the life experience. Without rain, there would be no green.

Shoes is a metaphor Slug often uses to refer to his coping mechanisms. More or less his safety blanket. Even with the world changing around him he finds it increasingly harder to deal with the stresses of life.
