Living under glass = Living in a world that is sealed by a thin layer of lies. The lovers prefer their illusion. Glass being transparent makes it a bit easier to forget that its there.

The true value of youth is innocence. But as we see, innocence is both a blessing and a curse.

The narrator switches back to the protagonist in this last line, as he says to her beloved that her innocence is what makes her beautiful, and he values most.

The tragedy is that this innocence, and innocence in general, can never last.

The verse opens with the love interest of the narrator inviting him to tease her with promises of true love and eternal devotion.

Notice that the tone the lyrics are written with seems to portray a sense of cruel irony, thus leading the listener to question whether the characters in the song knowingly act this way (believing their idealistic attachment is true, rather than a dramatic exaggeration), or if the narrator intervenes by expressing his own opinions through the characters' dialogue.

Billy has written various songs that touch upon the subject of young love, often with a poetic and dramatic sight.

The first verse seems to introduce us to a scenario involving two lovers. The song from here on questions the matter of what true love really is and how it manifests itself.

This verse also gives insight into the age of the lovers, which seems to indicate they’re very young.

When you read into the song, it becomes apparent that there is a thematical relationship between the song and Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.

Sadly, it won´t. The high and the joy only lasts for so long, before you come down and crash. And the cycle repeats itself.

He’s got only one solution to his problems: making them go away by getting high, or drunk, or merely trying to focus his attention on something else than his grief.

However, he cannot do it, he’s unable to do so. He’s trying to get away from something he found. Could this be his friends?, a lover?, maybe the lifestyle that once proved joyous and now turns sour. His days are filled with misery.

“Once, if my memory serves me well, my life was a banquet where every heart revealed itself, where every wine flowed. One evening I took Beauty in my arms – and I thought her bitter – and I raped her.”

The grievances of everyday life have got the narrator pinned down and cornerd. He’s let his problems escalate to the point where he’s unable to cope, and needs some form of escape. Namely, thru substance abuse and destructive behaviour.

Meet French poet, Arthur Rimbaud, precursor of Surrealism and poster child of the Decadent Movement. He’s also one of the main inspirations of Elias, the band’s singer and lyricist.

Rimbaud’s sad texts and dramatic writing probably inspired much of the lyrics in this album.

Sarim Al-Rawi was the original drummer and founding member of Titus Andronicus, together with Patrick. He’s the one that introduced him to punk rock.

Sadly, I couldn’t find a picture of Sarim, but here’s one of Patrick eatin' pizza.
