A long December and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
A Long December by Counting Crows

It’s amazing how the first lines of the song explain the entire theme.

“It’s a song about looking back on your life and seeing changes happening, and for once for me, looking forward and thinking, ya know, things are gonna change for the better — ‘maybe this year will be better than the last’ — and so, like a lot of songs on the end of an album it’s not about everything turning out great, but it at least it is about hope… and the possibilities…” — Adam Duritz

I can't remember all the times I tried to tell my myself
To hold on to these moments as they pass

Makes you talk a little lower
About the things you could not show her
A Long December by Counting Crows

Refers to the previous line and also to Duritz friend Jennifer. He wanted to show/tell her about everything good that was happening (the second album being recorded, moments with friends, etc) but couldn’t because of her state.

The smell of hospitals in Winter A Long December by Counting Crows

Adam’s friend Jennifer was hit by a car in December of 1995 and visited her all throughout the Winter. There is just something different about going to a place like that during that time of the year.

I can't remember the last thing that you said as you were leavin'
Now the days go by so fast
A Long December by Counting Crows

Refers to their friend Jennifer who was run over by a car. Duritz would visit her every morning and then head to the studio. This monotonous lifestyle can seem to go by fast.

Drove up to Hillside Manor sometime after 2 A.M
And talked a little while about the year
A Long December by Counting Crows

One day Duritz left the studio at 2 A.M. and drove to Hillside Manor which was what they called the house that belonged to his friends Samantha and Tracy. He had woken them up and sat for a couple hours just talking to them about everything that had been happening in his life.

An iPod mind to you Walkman guys The Crazy by Wale

An iPod is a far superior electronic as opposed to a Walkman. It holds more music, is (electronically) “smarter”, and it even look more fresh.
