Referee Chris Foy has a history of controversial, often clearly wrong, decisions. He can add yet another one to the annuls of history.

Mikel Arteta definitely fouls Marouane Chamakh, who dribbles past him and is leaving him in his dust.

However, Chamakh is still 45 yards from goal. In this situation a red card is only issued if the foul denies a clear goalscoring opportunity. Chris Foy thinking Chamakh has a clear opportunity from so far out is flattering for a striker that’s had just one shot all season before this match. It’s a harsh decision at a time when the game was still in the balance.

The effect on Arsenal was obvious. Their attacking third passes dropped dead after the sending off, as they sought to plug the hole in their side and preserve the lead.

It was a clear penalty for Arsenal, Palace’s Moxie chopping down his man in the box. Arteta rarely makes mistakes from the spot and his kick was perfectly placed.

To cap a fantastic display of skill and technique, Lallana’s important goal took a great deal of fortune.

The ball is delivered in from the corner. Being late in the game, nearly every available man piles in towards it. Soton defender Dejan Lovren manages to scrap it goalwards with his leg.

It’s going in anyway but Lallana, who was standing in front of the goalkeeper in an attempt to put him off, flicks the ball on unintentionally with the inside of his knee, altering the direction of the ball and ensuring De Gea could never predict its flight.

Dejan Lovren will have to argue with him over bragging rights, and later claimed that the goal should be “80%” his.

Lallana only made 3 real shots in the match, his goal being a wholly unintentional deflection off his knee, but all of his efforts were heading into the net.

He had two shots from range, both of which tested United keeper David De Gea, and one from six yards which was blocked.

Playing on the right of an attacking midfield three, Lallana mainly operates on that side of the pitch. However he’s a versatile forward player, able to vary his runs by cutting inside the pitch or taking the ball wide and to the byline.

Lallana’s heatmap of touches shows that he is very comfortable carrying the ball into the middle of the pitch.

#A RARE HEADED GOAL!!!

…Is what clichéd commentators the world over would have been shouting, as Mesut Ozil scored to put Arsenal two ahead. He’s usually renowned for his ball control on the ground, but he managed to be in the right place here to make things comfortable for the home side.

Many of Liverpool’s key players were away on international duty last week. In fact, their entire central spine have been jetting across the globe:
Simon Mignolet (GK) – Belgium
Martin Skrtel (CD) – Slovakia
Steven Gerrard (CM) – England
Victor Moses (CAM) – Nigeria
Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge (CF) – Uruguay, England

Their weary legs showed, as they struggled to overcome a Newcastle team who played half of the match with a man down. The pace was slow and scrappy on a wet pitch, but the match managed to produce excitement.
